TDIPAZ Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 Hiya all...Ref 6 speed manual box...Does anybody have or have had a noisy/notchy gears remote lever gear selection whilst changing gear between 1st, 2nd & 3rd gears when they 1st pull away changing gear from a cold engine start.. The noise seems to be from the gear shift leaver tunnal area...? is there anything i can do to make it change gear smoother? or have i got to spend a lot of money or put up with it...It changes quiet and smooth after a few miles when all has warmed up... just had this motor so its the first thin to anoy me...please can any one help? tim-spam Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 The VAG 6-speed gearboxes tend to be a bit 'crunchy' when cold, but also seem to last the course very well. So, basically, I do not think you need to worry too much. Quote
jkspoff Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 It tends to be the cold weather that causes this. When warmed up its fine, I have same gearbox/spec etc and find that its just the cold, just like my bones. Quote
TDIPAZ Posted March 1, 2006 Author Report Posted March 1, 2006 Thanks guys  i'm starting to feel a bit more at ease now i've read your replies...thought it does seem bad that a car with only 21k should feel like its done 100k...but yes it does go ok when its warmed up.....i thought maybe differant oil in the gear box would help?....or something...as you say it must be normal for these Vw gear boxes ...or does anyone say different? Jeff115 Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 Snap  TDIPAZ,See here and you're not alone in having manual transmission problems on a low mileage unit6-sp manal transmission issues i thought maybe differant oil in the gear box would help I'm going to change the transmission oil to Millers CRX LS 80w90 Semi-Synthetic Gear Oil and I'll let you know results. TDIPAZ Posted March 1, 2006 Author Report Posted March 1, 2006  thanks jeff115 it looks as though VW stuff aint as good as its made out to be...? i usually keep a motor for a long time, so i hope it does'nt get worse..cheers folks Quote
Jeff115 Posted April 9, 2006 Report Posted April 9, 2006 I recently replaced the transmission oil with Millers CRX LS 80w90 Semi-Synthetic Gear Oil. Unfortunately although it solved the 3rd gear scrunching, it exaggerated the notchiness into 2nd and 3rd when cold. This oil was obviously too thick for the gearbox and could not reach all parts quickly when cold. Last week I drained again and refilled with Dexron 111 and a Molyslip additive - this seems to have sorted all issues and gear change is now slick and sweet. Regards,Jeff. Quote
