Hi all,

My wife and i did this job about 3 months ago... we used a blow torch to free up the seized grease / clog. But we have a problem.. we were left with a strange issue when we replaced the linkage (ps what a pain in the backside to get it in and out!)

The wipers dont sit properly.

One seems to have a reduced wiping arc ... so the passenger side one is fine, the drivers side sits about 6 inches up the window at rest. We tried adjusting it from the screw where the wipers attach over the bonnet... but no good. Cant figure it out!

It looks really crap. <_<

Thanks for the pictures, they will be a great help to what i have come to think of a one of many, many minor annoying problems with the Galaxy.

One question....How do I get down to the wiper housing and remove it? - where do I begin? This will be my first proper dismatling job

Thanks for this and all of the other great insight and information that I have found on the site. Keep it up

Take the wiper arms off again.

Switch on the wipers with the arms removed, then turn them off, this will ensure they are parked in the correct position.

Refit them onto the splines without turning the shafts. If they are at the wrong angle lift them off, rotate them slightly, then place them back on, again do not turn the shafts.

They should be positioned as per my last photo above.

If you do rotate the shaft when fitting them onto the splines, start again!

May I add myself as a victim of this common problem. I went through the thought process of well should I purchase a new motor, just in case and thinking well why you have the mechanism out it will be easier to change the motor.

DON'T!!!!!

Although having looked/read the post/pics I initially became a bit itimidated especially by the thread who stated it took about three days.

I decided to have a go on a friday night (I too have much better things to do on Friday nights to), as I didn't want to get ripped off by the Stealers. I started the job at 17:00hrs, and got stuck in. Now let me tell you that I am no way an engineer or mechanic with fancy tools, but without gloating I had finished and was having tea, half way down a bottle of wine by 20:00 hrs. The job is more simple than it looks, and I had to force one spindle out.

I wil add that this is one of those tasks which is easier to do than it seems as you get the jist as dismantle the bits to gain access and remove the linkage.

In fact the worst part of the job (in my case is having to remove the sump tray, as I allowed 1 Socket, one washer and the dipstick grommet to fall down the engine bay Damn!!, this can be avoided by not leaving tools/components on the engine when not in use.

My wipers now work perfectly with the original motor.

This type of job gives you a load of satisfaction because, it can

1. potentially save you a fortune (your money is better in your bank, not theirs)

2. give you the knowledge that you have performed a thorough job

3. employ self confidence in perfroming DIY

Good luck and enjoy!

Twas moi that took 3 days........i admit it was a long time, but i didnt have the time to work on it constantly as i have 4 wee uns to take care of aswell.Plus i took it slow as i didnt want to break it :16: Besides, one of my spindles was well and truely seized and that was what took me so long.

I have the same problem. (found out last night in horizontal sleet!!) I do not have a worshop manual for my Galaxy yet. Are there instaructions available on how to reomve the linkage? Access looks quite poor. Please help.

oooo its a bugger when they stop in pouring rain.

you need to remove the wiper arms first, best to mark ont he screen where they lay before doing this so you know where they should be against the screen

you will need to remove the black air box to give you room in getting the linkage in and out.will need to remove the black shroud the covers the linkage. The linkage is bolted on as you will see when you take the shroud off.Be careful as the motor is attached to linkage via a plug, will need to undo this..

when you have managed to get the linkage off, please dont whack it with a hammer..they can break.

when you do finally get it unseized ( if that is the problem) be a good idea to have a clean inside the shaft where the spindles go then put some copper ease ( or whatever you prefer ) on the spindles before sliding back into the shaft.

There will be a couple of flat clip things on the top and bottom of the spindles.

when you go to put linkage back into the car, connect up to the motor BEFORE re-fitting linkage then very carefully holding/balancing the linkage ( watch fingers for this bit ) turn the ignition key so electrics come on and the linkage will move into the park position ( the position the wipers are in when the car is switched off and wipers off )

the refit linkage.then put wipers back on.then if you so wish, test the things before you put everything back together.

If wipers are not sorted out when they start to go, or when they do go, and you keep trying to make them work, then the motor can go kaput.

Hope this helps.

Very easy fix for this common fault, 5 minute no dismantling required, simply get an electric drill 2mm ish bit, drill through aluminium casting that the spindle runs through until the bit hits the spindle, approximately half way between the bottom link and the top where the wiper arm locates then apply a squirt of spray grease through the hole with the applicator pipe on the grease tin and whacko the diddle o .......... speedy wipers again, happy days.

Hello all,

My local garage greased my wiper mechanism last week (for the second time) and on a 50 mile trip down the M4 the wipers again slowed down. Putting them on fast helped for a while until they again started to slow down and I could smell what I presume was an overheating wiper motor. I managed to make it to a service station where I let things cool down for about 20 mins but I had to get going again as I had an appointment to keep. I found that if I flicked it straight into fast wipe for one sweep then off for it to cool down a little until I couldn't see anymore and had to do another fast sweep. I managed to drive about 55 miles like this and never want to do it again! My wrist was aching after all the flicking on and off.

Now everything has cooled down and rested my wipers don't move as fast as they used to on normal speed (whick was never as fast as I would have liked) but nice and fast on full speed.

I took it back to my garage yesterday and they advise changing the wiper mechanism and/or the motor as there was that smell. They said it is hard to tell which (or both) is best to change.

My instinct is just to get the lot changed as I want reliable wipers and plan to keep my Gal for a long time. I believe though that the parts from Ford might be quite pricey. My garage will tell me how much on Monday but I was going to see how cheap I could find the two parts in the mean time.

I see there are some on Ebay for sale. Would you trust reconditioned parts? Are there any other websites I should look for cheap parts?

Does anyone know if the wiper mechanism and motor is the same for my Mk1 as for the Mk2's or should I look out for specific model No.'s?

I read earlier on this thread that VW parts are somewhat cheaper than from Ford and would fit. If this is so, does anyone know the relavant VW part No.s.

I realise it would be a lot cheaper trying to do the jobs myself but I'm afraid changing a tyre is about as mechanical as I get with cars (and I haven't tried to get to the spare on my Gal yet!)

Thank you all for any advice you can give.

Neil.

I have found 3 and 4 bold versions of the wiper mechanism for my age Gal on Ebay. Does anyone know which type would be right for my car?

Thanks, Neil.

Hi. I know this is a bit late for me to reply but according to my own Galaxy the answer to your question is 'NO' i.e. there is no female spindle, instead, the motor spigot is held in place in the round hole in the centre of the plate simply by the torque of the spigot nut!

Did the easy fix on my Bammer a couple of months back.

Works brilliantly.

I've even told the garage I use to lubricate them through these holes.

Same happened to me last week. The arm that connects to the motor needs to be turned 180 degrees ; - )
