Maf Kaput?

I know that MAF's have been covered before but wondered if any can answer this

 

little question. I an running a 98 V6 Auto Gal. Performance seems fine but not

 

excessively quick. I disconnected the MAF lead but nothing at all has changed with

 

the way the car runs. Everything seems fine. Does the MAF really make that much

 

difference?

Yes, gave it a good blast the other day. No change!!

hmm...when our maf went..had no balls uphill..lucky if we got 25mph out of it...when we disconnected maf....we got our oomph back and now it flies up hills!!

if your is no change whatso ever...then i dont know...checked pollen filters etcc????

 

car might be in limp mode actually.

 

ah yours is auto....dont know bout them as ours is manual...the othres will be along later and give you more advice, im still learning the mechanics of our car. ;)

If the MAF isn't working correctly the engine management system doesn't know how much air is going into the system and thus can't work out how much fuel to pour in. If disconnecting it has made no difference it's a pretty clear indication you have a MAF problem which COULD be the MAF, the wiring or the ECU itself in that order.

I'm not sure the MAF is as important on the VR6 as on TDI's? if the PCM senses a Maf fault it uses the throttle body potentiometer to gain info on air intake, it may reduce power output fropm the engine as this info isnt as detailed as if it's from the MAF, but the loss shouldnt be as drastic as on a TDI when it's MAF fails ;)

Performance is a pretty subjective thing - certainly the Mk 1 V6's put out a fair bit less power than the later ones (170 vs 200bhp or thereabouts)

 

What do you call fine or excessive performance ?
