Just 4 months into ownership of our 2002 Galaxy Tdi 115 Auto Zetec . Great car with one minor irritation.....the parking sensors! Is there any way in which they can be switched off except when you need them, rather than the other way round? I would guess it is some simple switch rewiring but has anyone tried it??

PS Excellent site by the way...just found it by accident!

My neighbour has a Volvo V70 with which he tows a caravan, and he has had a switch installed in line to turn the sensors off when he has the caravan hitched up. Seems to work with out problem.

Not quite sure what you mean by switching them off. They are only active when you go into reverse or switch them on in forward below 15 kph and then they are noticable if there is something in front or behind which makes them bleep, which is the point of parking sensors!

To clarify, I just want to choose when to use the parking sensors...mostly I can park without all the bleeping, it is only in tighter spots I might want the parking aid. They also bleep when someone walks by the vehicle if I am in slow moving traffic in town etc...irritating!

Are the sensors on all the time? (re: people walking past in slow moving traffic set them off).

On our car they only come on either when I press the button on the console or I put the car in reverse. They are not on all the time.
They can be slightly annoying but I find that I need them on more often than not needing them, so automatically coming on when in reverse seems ok.

sensors switch off automatically when you go over a certain speed (10mph?) and only come back on if you reverse or hit the switch.

I think they're great, just hit the button to switch off if you haven't gone over the 10mph and hit a traffic jam.

It does sound as though you might have a fault in them if people walking by in slow moving traffic set them off. I have never had this problem. They should definately switch off at 15 kph or 10 mph and only come on when you select reverse or press the button on the console.

Front only come on if reverse is/has been selected OR button pressed AND forward speed is less than 10mph. They do not come on on their own when driving forward.

sorry sa your dead wrong there
not sure what your seat does because i dont have one
but on my galaxy tdi ghia ,when i parked in my garage get about 2 foot from the wall the front come on ..without me pressing the button

have a nice day

On my 2001 Ghia TDI, front parking sensors only operate as per SA I's info; i.e. you must have recently engaged reverse (or pressed the switch on centre console) and not exceeded about 10mph.

the truth is ivor on my 2002 i dont have to press nothing i dont go into reverse because im driving straight into the garage,i get a couple of feet from the wall and i get beeps from the back where its close to the sides of the garage door
then the front start beeping to

the only thing i can think is where the backs come on ,and with the front so close to the wall that brings them on to,unless fords done changes to dec 2002 model, which i cant see,

my old y reg did not do this and that was 1.9tdi ghia also

mind u has a few changes from the late 2002 model

Parking sensors don't just have a direct forwards and reverse sensing function they also radiate outwards slightly from the corners as I have noticed when reversing out of my drive and doing a reverse park, which is very useful for myself.
With regard to the problem of them coming on for no apparent reason:-
I wonder if you have possibly selected reverse which activates the sensor function or just started up the car. ( General question:-Do the sensors switch of after deselecting reverse?)
When the car goes forwards and does not travel at more than 15mph the sensors remain active, both front and rear.
Why I reply on this topic is I find the standard fitment of parking sensors one of the most useful innovations in automotive technology in the last 20 years following ABS and Power Steering. (ABS we get a fair bit of snow/ice in winter and Power steering helps my wife and myself now)
I feel all should be and will be standard fitments in the near future (ABS from next year?)
Parking sensors standard are one reason I bought a Galaxy Ghia.
If like me you have vision in one eye only then distance measurement is far more difficult over those last 12 to 18 inches when parking.
Width and going through gaps is not a problem, you line up at a distance and take it easy. The curved 'lane changer' mirror which sits over the interior mirror, I bought from Halfords (about

Tried this with mine tonight. The fronts definately don't come on with mine unless you've selected reverse or pressed the button. I have had one thought though Jim, you've got an auto and to get from park to drive, you have to pass through reverse, I imagine that the sensors get switched on as you do this or the sensors are wired differently for an auto box.

might well be howard, also what it might be is i dont go from park to reverse to drive when im commin home ,shes already in drive but as i slow down to go on my drive,my rear sensors might come on as i pass the wall, then in turn enter the garage which might bring on the front ,then park up to the front wall

all the best

Hooked up VAG-COM tonight - there appears to be no option available to make the front sensors come on automatically, though the speed at which they go off may be there - that ain't on my car, it's on my old fellas 2002 V6 Auto Gal firebreather.

hi sa

i still think its where my rear bumper passes so close to the wall, starts the rear sensors off, then right after the front enters the garage which inturn brings on the front ones

done it again last night

So if you drive to a clear area and come to rest, with the engine running, if someone were to walk from the back of the car past the sensors and then past the front ones you might be able to simulate the same conditions!
Ah! Remember the front sensors have already passed the entrance. You may need to pass from the front to the back and the front again!!!

Sounds like a joke, but I find that if you can cause a condition to arise under your control you've almost got the problem licked.

u need to look at it like this the car goes on the drive the front passes the wall

then just as it go into the garage the rear goes pass and there is very littlespace
on the ns&os so they rear comes on,no sooner than that the front come on also
because she has entered the garage so has i drive in both the front and back start beeping,so has i drive up to the wall they come on again

plus it does tell u this in the handbook
