Has anyone got any ideas what this problem could be. My car has been in the dealers for a week and they have given up.

I had this problem last year and not sure what happened but the chain to the oil pump snapped causing the engine to seize and also damage the valves and head.

I had a garage " under the arches type " sorce a second hand engine and they fitted it, but found it idles rough and has a hesitation on pulling from low revs.

after a few day of them looking I gave up on them and took it to the ford dealer , he looked for a week and gave up.

I need to get this sorted as my wife refuses to drive it now as she was driving when the engine went the first time and she was broke down hundreds of miles away from home with a car full of kids!

anyway any helpfull pointers greatfully recieved.

The main dealer tried the leads , coil pacs , MAF, checked for vacuum leaks, cleaned various bits not listed. It was in the Ford main dealers a week.

Thier only other action was to remove the engine. At this point i called a halt to it which is where I am now.

I did notice they only visually inspected the vacuum hoses , i may change these out as it would be difficult to spot a vacuum leak.

my only other thing is to send the ECU away for testing.

latest findings after warming the engine,

I listened to the engine note change whilst watching the rev. counter.

I did three tests at different RPM:-

* Tickover: Hunting +/- 100rpm.

* 1500rpm: Hunting +/- 500rpm. - mysterious.

* 3000rpm: Hunting +/- 75rpm.

In all instances, there was a faultlessly regular pattern of increasing and decreasing in power (no misfiring).

any ideas all good information greatfully recieved

the trouble is that that the ford engine is a very complex system with many sensors and controllers (more than 40) each of them can fail. certainly some of them will fail after some years or will gradually fail, causing strange driving behaviour.

You can exchange all sensors but it will cost you a fortune. A ECU diagnosis could point out the defect part, then you are lucky. My experience is that some faults can not be diagnosed, f.e. a shorted cable.

in that case you have to work systematicly, replace/clean suspect parts and see if it has effect to the driving behaviour, starting with the Air control Valve. see the forum topic

I had _kind_ of a similar problem, not a classic misfire, but low power at low rev's, rough idle etc, even lost all power a few times at 60/70 on motorway.

Turned out to be the spark plugs.

Dealer had fitted a new set when the old ones had done 70k (and was misfiring), but after 3-4 more visits to the dealer with same fault, they discovered that the new ones came from a batch of faulty plugs from Ford (they had several other cars in all with the same faults).
