Wonder if anyone can help with another non-starting Galaxy. I've carried out a lot of checks and have now run out of ideas so I'm asking the oracle. Here's what I've tested etc.

Problem Galaxy 1.9 tdi manual (N reg - pre 09/96) will not start

1. PATS - door led illuminates for 3 secs then goes out. If I deadlock car led flashes at 0.5 hz. I can also select remote control code alignment i.e. urn key to unlock 3 times etc. - I assume from this the PATS and immobiliser are OK. Anyone any ideas for other PATS immobiliser checka.

2. VAG check carried out on central locking and immobilise contollers no faults recorded.

3. VAG check carried out on Engine controller no faults recorded. If I look at the idividual measuring blocks I can view all sensor outputs in each of the groups. e.g. If I monitor throttle position it's 0% with foot off and 100% when pressed fully down. I assume from this Relay 109 is OK. I've resoldered all the joints on the relay PCB just in case.

4. Glowplug light illuminates when ignition is first switched on - goes off after a couple of seconds. Again I think this confirms Relay 109 is OK.

5. Battery voltage is 12v and when I measere on pin 30 of relay 109 I see 11.87v

6. Incase I've got a sticking Engine Stop Contol solenoid I've removed the plunger.

7. Measured pin 5 of connector C609 (desiel pump unit plug) = 11.86v

8. Cambelt was replaced 10k miles ago and is intact, cannot believe it slipped

If anyone has VAG measurement blocks for each group of the engine controller (engine not running) so I can compare with my reading I'd be most grateful.

I'm begining to believe it's the diesel pump, but as it happened overnight (Ran OK one day and then the next morning nothing) I'm more inclinded to think it's electical.

Any help, ideas or other tests would be most appreciated. I'm using VAG 409.1 if anyone has additional tests I can try.

Yes, it cranks over OK and Vag measurement block measures a rpm figure when it's turning.

Is there voltage at the fuel cut-off valve ?

Sounds like no fuel to me ( mine currently has a bodge lead direct to battery until it gets fixed ).

Car is pointing very slightly uphill with 1/2 tank of diesel.

From above:

Incase I've got a sticking Engine Stop Contol solenoid (Fuel cut-off valve) I've removed the plunger.

So voltage at that point is irrelevent. As a check should it be a permant 12v.

It's definately no fuel, but with the PATS/Immobiliser/Powertrain Control Module/Diesel Pump Unit interlocks it could be fuel or electical. If the pump was going U/S I'd expect to have some symptoms beforehand.

Big Kev,

Checked the cut-off valve while cranking 12v.

Car has been stood for a while so does anyone know how to purge system in case I have an air lock or will cranking for an extended period (5 mins?) did the trick.

Any suggestions are most appreciated, because I cannot find anything wrong and it still won't start.

I'm a little confused. Is the pump electrical or mechanical?

I had a problem with a scorpio once where the immobilser box had an intermittent fault which broke the feed to the pump and since you seem to have some warning lights I wonder if this might be worth exploring.

Re cranking - I had a similar problem a week ago, caused by a lack of fuel and steep slope. In my case cranking steadily for about 2 minutes did it but the total cranking time was nearer 10.

Scorpiorefugee,

Pump is mechanical. Monitored VAG immobiliser controller whilst cranking and this reported no faults. I suspect I need to give it a good cranking as I cannot find anything wrong. It may be that I've cured the fault, the cars been stood for a couple of months whilst I purchased VAG cable etc and waited for the weather to improve, and now all I need to do is drag the diesel up from the tank.

Any ideas gratefully accepted.

<_< Fixed it. As suggest a good cranking approx 3 mins and the old Gal burst into life.

Suspect I cured the fault earlier, but didn't prime the diesel pump.

Many thanks to Scorpiorefugee who suggested the solution.

:) :) :)

All that remains is to worry about how it got to this stage. I don't like 'probably' but there are times when we must accept it.

Hope you don't get a repeat but at least you know what to do next time.

<_<
