You're pulling our legs????

6th at 30mph.

Blatters[/quote]
Nope

If it's flat and just coasting, 6th is ok at around 900rpm
5th definately
I only use 4th for hills, steep hills maybe 3rd (@30mph)

The steep hill on the M5 going to Exeter - goes up in 6th no probs.
Pulls the caravan in 6th at 50-60 no probs.

Have they changed the ratio? Mine is July 2000, 1st of new shape.

Ivor,

No I think they're all the same.

I change up to 6th at 50mph. It's not that it does anything crazy lower down but I don't want to labour the engine - always thought that was bad for it, you see.

30mph is too low to be using 6th - 900 rpm! You should aim to keep the revs over 1300 - 1400, otherwise you will be labouring the engine, increasing its wear rate and using more fuel. I wouldn't let anyone drive my car if I thought they were going to abuse the engine like that!

I know when it is labouring.

On a long flat straight road it's fine.
I'm not going to put my foot down and accelerate, I will change down for that, but for a long straight flat stretch its no problem.

All I am saying is that 4th at 30mph is no problem which is how this thread started off.

Going up hills I like to keep it around 2000rpm, irrespective of gear.

Believe me, I would be the last one to labour my engine. I'm keeping this car as it is a beauty and no different from when I bought it except some digits have appeared on my odometer.

I too think 30mph in 6th irespective of road conditions can't be good for an engine diesel or petrol. Mine is ok in 4th at 30mph but it does make a slight labouring sound when trying to pull away fast but you can pull away very slowlly.

Old topic I know, but I just wanted to add that I find it odd that people find it irritating that you can't do 30mph in 4th. If you use 3rd, not only is it better for the engine as it's in it's sweet spot, it achieves much better MPG than 4th, especially when used in conjunction with cruise control.

As for 30mph in 6th. What?! Have some mechanical sympathy man! If you think that hauling 2 tonnes of car along a flat road at 900RPM is not labouring the engine, you are surely mistaken. Try the test. Drive the same flat road in 6th @ 30mph then try it in 3rd, & I think you'll find you'll get a better mpg in 3rd.

Cheers,

Gwaredd.
