seatkid Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 OK mumof6, I have had a look at the service manual and changing the brushes or voltage regulator (diode pack) is easy peasy lemon squeezy. So why not whip it off and have a look.... HOLD ON THERE! The diode pack is not the voltage regulator. The diode pack is buried deep in the alternator and is soldered to the stator windings.I think it unlikely that you will get a new diode pack and unless youve got maufacturing facilities I dont think you'll be able to change them anyway. In any case, from the evidence, your alternator has been cooked with a short circuit - by the time the diode packs blew, the rotor and stator would have been stinking hot and there is likely to be damage to the windings etc. The only question is, are you confident that the garage is correct with their diagnosis? Masked Marauder Posted February 7, 2006 Report Posted February 7, 2006 I was led to believe it was in the regulator on this alternator. In any case I doubt the diodes will be damaged. The damage to the wires is most likely a corroded connection where the wire went into the terminal. I know I have not tested the alternator, but I doubt there is anything much wrong with it. Whilst the wires melting is clearly heat-related I can not see what it could have short circuted onto if the wire was connected into the internal fusebox correctly. And as for the diodes being deep inside the alternator, there are many many alternators were the diode pack is plugged into the casing. Perhaps not on this one, like I said, I was led to believe they were in the regulator. Quote
mumof4 Posted February 7, 2006 Author Report Posted February 7, 2006 Right.....i dont have a clue what is wrong with the alternator,on the invoice from the first garage it says that the diode pack is burnt out....2nd garage hasnt had chance to look at it yet as he is going on what the first garage said...do i trust the first garage???no.do i trust the 2nd garage???yes.2nd garage is taking the alternator out of the car tomorrow and giving it to me to bring home.the alternator belt is intact...we have plenty of time to get this sorted as the car is sorn declared.its off road now.no point paying the road tax if its not on the road as it was due to be taxed at the end of jan.if someone could look at it that would be great as the garage doesnot mind if i sort it myself as he is aware of all that has gone on with the other garage etc...he knows that i amtrying to get a crash course in mechanics to try and solve the problem myself.where abouts are you MM???.this car is gradually wearing me down now with everything that has gone on...all i would like is the ruddy thing sorted once and for all.I am gratefull for all the help you all are giving me in trying to sort this out.please bear with me if i lose the plot a bit as there is so much going on at the mo!! :D Quote

Masked Marauder Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 Is it a nut or a screw? You need an impact driver if it is a screw. Quote
mumof4 Posted February 9, 2006 Author Report Posted February 9, 2006 impact driver???...trying to use my socket set!! Got a drill...big mf that i got for xmas!! there are two looks like a nut on a srew...one is flat(can only just see a bit of the screw)..the other has part of the screw poking up. Quote
mumof4 Posted February 9, 2006 Author Report Posted February 9, 2006 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BOSCH-ALTERNATOR-GAL...1QQcmdZViewItem hope this linc works...will this fit mine even tho my part number is 028 903 028 E ?????? Quote
Masked Marauder Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 It should be a straight swap. In any case there is no 028-903-029-B alternator listed in any of my parts catalogues for a 1.9TDi Shalhaxy. It is a Hitachi made one for other models. Yours is you say a 028-903-028-E, that is listed as a 120 amp alternator for a TDi. As to compatability? Well he clearly states it is a Bosch item. So has he mistaken the 9 on the end of the part number, is it really an 8? If so then it is a Bosch alternator for a 1.9TDi. But your guess is as good as mine.... Quote
mumof4 Posted February 9, 2006 Author Report Posted February 9, 2006 Thx MM......ill zip him an email to confirm. Quote
