Ir Remote Key Programming

I have searched and tried all sorts of suggestions, but I cannot seem to get my 1997/8 R reg 2.3 Giha X into programming mode.

 

I have tried unlocking, opening the door, closing it, turning key to open position 3 times within 5 seconds, and I just cannot get it into programming mode.

 

I have searched the forum and nothing has helped.

 

Does anyone have info for me? Is it something about the model/year or could I be turning the key wrongly/using the wrong key?

 

Please help.

Yes I forgot to mention that it used to work, so fair comment regarding wether it has remote, but it does.

 

Interesting idea about the controller. I have downloaded vag com, I take it it works with the Elector obd interface? Hopefully I will be able to find out if there are any errors reported by the controller.

This is what I wrote down when I managed to do this myself about 6 months ago:-

 

"Hold key in lock, turn to unlock 3 x, this illuminates red light in driver's door. Press and hold unlock on key and press lock 3 x to get light in driver's door flashing again"

 

Job done, (hopefully).

I can get my V6 into programming mode, exactly as you describe, but my 2.3 won't, so I think the suggestion that the controller has died is probably correct.
