About To Buy A 2.8 V6 Lpg Convert - Q's ?

Hi Group - Newbie here - total newb !

I currently drive a 3.0 hilux but recently my job has moved to chorley meaning I got a new 80 mile round trip a day to do and I canny afford the hilux no more :)(((

So I got to looking at LPG converted galaxies - only 1 around here.

I found the 2.8 GLX on an M plate - 1995. it has FSH but no paperwork for the lpg. 115,000 miles and sounds good at 2500....

Does this sound reasonable to you or is it too much to pay ?

Has anyone any experience of an LPG converted 2.8 v6 ?

I expect to get 22 - 24 mpg as standard, so if its gassed I should be looking at a 40 mpg equivolent for price - does that sound about right ?

Anything I should look out for on these models ? what checks to make ?

Many thanks for any advice offerd.

Regds.

Firstly I personally wouldn't be happy with an LPG converted car, been there, done that, wouldn't go back again (never had any problems with my LPG'd Range Rover but just don't like the safety aspect.)

There are a few people on here runninG LPG's galaxies and they all seem quite happy so if it floats your boat - go for it.

What to look out for:-

Make sure everything is working, all electrics etc.

Get an inspection for the LPG done, without it you won't get insurance (unless you don't tell them, in which case you're then not insured).

LPG engines will last longer due to less oil contamination etc

It's greener than petrol

MOT's without a CAT are possible

Check for the dreaded timing chain rattle on cold start

Make sure the engine under cover is fitted

When driving the changeover from petrol to gas should be seemless, no cough, splutter or flashing lights and ditto when changing back. Usually the changeover to gas occurs under acceleration and back to petrol on overrun when the fuel selection has been made. There will be a performance drop on LPG because the timing on the Galaxy won't change when running on gas (it needs a lot more advance) but there should still be plenty from a V6

You could always of course do it properly and get a diesel (had to get that in to keep VR6GALAXY on his toes).

thanks for that John. Appreciated...

the only thing pointing me to lpg is the economy. I'm a kitesurfing dad so need the space offered by the galaxy and the added economy on lpg is just too attractive to overlook.

as I'm totaly new to galaxies - are there any known issues appart from the cam chain rattle - thats gotta be easy to fix if you can get softlink replacements ?

many thanks again.

I always thought LPG was LESS economical (slightly) than petrol, it was the fact it was so much cheaper than petrol to fill the tank was where the savings came from.

This was the case on a converted Nissan Primera some years ago

yep it is on the old single point or venturi systems but only a max 10% loss on the newer multipoints...been doing some reading. Also - I did say mpg Equivolent before didnt I ? if not thats what I meant - at the end of the day its the

I've always been happy with my LPG conversion, the money I've saved on fuel has just paid for today's brake caliper :)

Get the installation inspected/serviced by a good lpg installer (have a look here: http://www.my90.zenwebhosting.com/cgi-bin/....cgi?pg=topics).

Make sure the ignition system is up to spec, good plugs & leads are essential. Consider replacing them if you're not sure.

You will probably lose up to 10% power, mostly at the bottom end of the rev range, but if I can cope (and get an SP30) with my 2 litre Audi engine, you'll be fine with a V6.

Except on VERY cold days, I start on petrol, put my seatbelt on and then blip the throttle to change over to gas. If it's below freezing, I probably do a mile on petrol first.

go for it, you won't regret it. Plus it doesn't smell or smoke like some other fuels

Well its been a blast...

I went to see it - and at 2500 it was tatty as hell....harness wires all over the shop and the injection emulator was just left to hang - no certs nothin....I think i'll pass this one over....

Might find another - but then isnt the 2.0 TDi on Veggie Diesel a great idea ?

I use biodiesel now at 79.9 p so 40 odd MPG and the reduction in diesel cost might just be the ticket !

Will let you know...
