thanks VR6. they did mention that the battery was dead. i have never had a problem with the battery but have just had a look and noticed one of the cells smoking.

would this definately cause the 5 beeps?

Well, recently mine definately beeped 5 times when I definately left the bleeding lights on  And it defiantely wouldn't start either..

What was up with the autobox? Also, what was the cost, if you don't mind me asking!

nothing is on is far as i know. i am totally confused as i haven't had a problem with beeps before. just opened the door and had 5 beeps. they are coming from behind the dash, drivers side. shut the door again and opened it - no beeps. locked the door, opened it - no beeps. it only seems to happen after the car has been idle for longer.

had the autobox reconditioned in may -

If I found a cell smoking I'd emit a few beeps.

Sounds like you've bneefited from one of their special offers wher you get a foew extra faults fitted completely free of charge.(charge? Yuk! that was not intended!)

Thake it back and ask for the extra faults to be removed as you did not pay for them and cannot accept charity.

if these beeps are supposed to be warning me of something why is there nothing in the handbook? the only warning devices i know i have are for the leaving the lights or indicator on - it is one long beeeeeeeeeeppppppp or beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeppppppppppppppppp?? depending on how long i take to switch them off.

will test the battery today.

Battery dead. Have never had problems with it before, am hoping that the cold weather finally killed it and not something draining the power. Any comments would be welcome. Am still confused by the 5 beeps.

Get another couple of quotes and see how you feel....wen i got our last battery i told the garage exactly what i wanted (according to the specs in the handbook)...guy i spoke to said that he didnt realice there were acid batteries and calcium ones.(if i remember correctly) :P .

BUT....i like to do thingsaccording to the manual(sometimes anyway)...

as i said get another couple of quotes then see how the pricing goes..get one mid range price if you worried about getting an ultra cheap one. :P

Try your local Vauxhall dealer for a battery, they have a range called "Go" that are very high quality batteries at factor prices. And yes, they are for all makes and models, not just Vauxhall.

Just picked up car from autobox people. Gearbox is ok (not 100%) but I now get 5 beeps greeting me everytime I get into car. Any ideas?

I have just had a new Transmission Control Unit fitted in mine - the saga of the box in limp home mode features prominently on this site. The people who fixed it (Transmission Technologies UK of Knowle, Warwickshire) told me that the TCM is adaptive and adjusts itself to allow for the state of wear of the gearbox. He warned me that the changes may not be that good for the first 50 miles or so while it does this.

In the event, it has behaved in an exemplary manner since they returned it to me. :)

I would recommend them for auto box problems - they don't do anything else.

They fixed (at the first attempt) a problem which had baffled 2 different Ford dealers.

Can't help on the 5 beeps, I'm afraid. :(

I knew I had read something about five beeps!

Page 68 of my handbook:

rear power sockets - If the supplying voltage falls below 12 volts, the power sockets will turn off automatically. If the ignition is switched off , a chime will sound 5 times.
