marinabrid Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 took the tdi 90 out for 1st time yesterday on along run, came to a big hill, garrowby hill in east yorkshire near york if anyone know, its a steep one.car had run perfectly with wot i though was enough power, still not a patch on the wifes 110 though, up the hill down to 3 rd gear then even slower jeeeez dowm to 2nd doing 20mph engine just would not rev about 3000rpm till got to top of hill, never overheated though, no clutch slip or smell, much to my suprise. does this sound like i need to change the maf sensor, no fault codes logged on car just snails pace up big hill. back on the flat seemed to run normal up to 60 mph + thanks all Quote
mumof4 Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 Has your car lost its oomph????Check the air flow meter or whatever its called as this happened to ours...just crawled up hills...changed the aor flow meter and it was fine. Quote
johnb80 Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 Disconnect the MAF, if there's little or no difference then the MAF is favourite. Regards - JB Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 I had exactly the same problem but not quite so severe. In spite of being warned that it would not work, I removed the MAF and cleaned it thoroughly but carefully with carb cleaner and it is now much better. I don't know how good it should be, and like you, there's no comparison with the wife's 52 110 ghia, but the difference was very noticable at a critical 2800 rpm. It still dies a bit there but I find lifting off a bit eases it through and then it revs freely up to 4000 +. the MAF unit can be removed by undoing the two security torx screws on the housing which is on the output side of the air filter. Just one more point. I tried disconnecting it and the only difference was an increase in fuel consumption. Ron. Quote
galaxychap Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 better still get rid of it for a 2.8 mine flies up hills with ease :P Quote
johnb80 Posted January 30, 2006 Report Posted January 30, 2006 and empties your pockets and fuel tank with even greter ease :P Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 And I'll be suprised if you get 60K to a set of tyres... Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 60K! are you actually driving it, or are you using ferro-concrete tyres painted black? Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted February 1, 2006 Report Posted February 1, 2006 Actually, I'm guessing, based on 20K and no noticable wear on cheapies that cost me 55 quid each fitted etc.. As for driving, My dad taught me to drive as if I had a glass of water on the bonnet and I've covered the best part of 2,000,000 miles in 40 odd years (600 today and still got 1/4 tank) without knowingly getting in anyone's way but there is a lot of motorway work included.
