Ideas On Spare Wheel Carrier

anyone had an idea to replace this winch affair, thought about a piece of bar up thru the wheel and bolted over the top, anyone tried this or got any better ideas, damned if i pay

you chaps any ideas of what may happen inside the winding housing, the nut just goes round and round but the cable which is 3 feet undone dont move !!

i thought id put the wheel on the trolly jack and jack it up till the threaed bar was in sight then bolt it up.

I'm so glad I dont have a spare wheel :blink: the hassel of getting it down or replaceing back under the car seems like too much hard work and hassle to me :huh: thank god for a decent recovery service :huh: only took them 15 minutes to pick me up tonight and drop me off at the garage that was in rush hour :huh: and no I didnt have a puncture :huh:

Nope! full tank for the last three weeks :huh: half a gas tank as well but no aux drive belt tensioner pully :huh: found out how far you can go though on only the battery though :blink:

Vr6........where can i find diagrams showing the wiring for the window motors etccc from the front to the back???and diagrams to show me how to get the insides of the doors off so i can take it apart???

8 miles and the battery died, in an attempt to keep the engine cool I switched on the AC to force the fans on! I think this was a bad move :( middle lane on the entrance to a major roundabout next to Tesco's on the outskirts of town and it cut out and wouldnt start again :( DOH! bloody heavy things Galaxy's :D when you have to push them up hill :D

wiring diags are all on the TIS or online in German if you know where to look ;) not I can read German :D as for removeing the door cards matt will be along soon to tell of his one fairly usefull post on the topic :lol:

hi, when ifirst had my galaxy and had the same as you the poxy wire was stuck so when the galaxy first come out i must have been very lucky as i went to my local scrappy and told them i wanted to take off that part for my spare wheel he said ok so i took it off the scrapped galaxy took it to their office and guess what

If you had a TDi then in this weather you could have probably driven all day with no waterpump!

Mine Jacked in this w/e the 1st time I ever tried to remove the spare wheel. I tried to remove the spare to check the presure. The damn thing wouldn't come out far enough for me to to unclip the wheel. I then tried to wind it back up and hey presto nothing just clicks. I had to remove the winch and now I'm carrying the spare in the back (nice).

 

I grinded the rivots of and opened it up. The steel cable inside is all twisted and frayed. Just needs new cable and then rivoted/bolted back together.

 

TO AVOID THIS HAPPENING TO OTHER PEOPLE, I THINK WHEN YOU UNDO THE SPARE YOU MUST KEEP THE CABLE UNDER AS MUCH TENSION AS POSSIBLE AND WHEN PUT WHEEL BACK MAKE SURE THE TENSION IS IS STILL THERE OTHERWISE I CAN SEE THE CRAPPY DESIGIN HOW EASY IT WOULD BE KNACKER THE CABLE WINDINGS.

 

Now my question to anyone who can help. "Bigjeeze" in his reply above says he fixed his by puting in a new cable after he "braised" the cable ends (ie put the old cable ends onto the new cable after drilling them of the old cable).

 

I've drilled the old cable ends of but I'm not sure what "Brasing" envolves. I know its a type of soldering/welding technique but exactly how to perform the process I dont know. I have done basic plumbing and soldering at home using a gas blowlamp.

 

Any help most welcomed.

You can get brazing (not braising - that's what you do to beef!) rods from Halfords

which are essentially a brass mixture covered in a flux - you then need either a Gas welder - or as I did a couple of gas blow lamps - the process is very similar to soldering just hotter.

 

It worked for me - and still is.

Mine is still laying in the Garage. Spare wheel inside the car.

 

I drilled out the rivets but couldnt get the thing to come apart.

Might have another go when I get a chance.

 

On the brighter side, I was in the local Fraud dealer the other day and noticed they were clearing out Handbook packs for Mk1 Galaxys for

Do need to clean the cable ends and the new cable with anything before trying to braze them ?

 

How long do I need to heat up the joint before applying the rod.

 

I have a basic plumbing blow torch/lamp that I used to put a new radiator in, will this suffice do or will I need something more powerfull ?

 

 

Did it really take you 2 blowlamps to braze 2 cable ends ?

i think i've got a spare winder mechanism somewhere in the garage as i removed mine to make room for a battery tray in the boot.

Hi

 

When I say I used two I mean that I had them both on the work as it heated up more quickly. Yes you do need to ensure it is grease free before trying to braze it.

 

I used two ordinary plumbing type blowlamps - brazing does require more heat than soldering but not as much as welding so you should be OK.
