The fuel lines are held on by a couple of hose clips and a U shaped clip thingy..... Make sure you don't lose the rubber O ring on the bit that is held in with the U clip thingy...

Then just crank it over until it starts.

this if for a mk1 tdi as per original poster - my mistake

1. Remove the upper section of the engine compartment dividing panel.

2. Remove the engine compartment noise reduction panel.

3. Remove the fuel return hose retaining clip.

4. Disconnect the fuel return pipe.

5. Disconnect the fuel filter outlet pipe.

Remove the clip from the fuel filter outlet pipe.

6. Disconnect the fuel filter supply hose.

Remove the clip from the fuel filter supply pipe.

7. Remove the fuel filter.

I have just completed a minor service on my Gal today, done all the usual things, oil, most filters etc etc but my Haynes manual tells me the fuel filter should be changed every 20,000 miles, is this really necessary ? If so has anyone got any better pictures of when they've done it, so I can make an attempt at it ? I know there is the above postings, but still a bit cautious about doing it, in case I mess it up, does fuel pour out when the filter is released ? <_<

Hi, i done my filter for the first time about 6 months ago and it really is an easy job if not a bit fiddly

Just undo the retaining clip that holds the filter in place.

there are small spring clips that hold the pipes on the filter (2 i think) and another spring clip that sits in the top of the filter housing, but when you take that one out be carfull not to loose the little rubber O ring inside.

I had very little diesel run out of mine and as long as keep the filter upright when you remove it then it wont be a problem.

Just have a good look at it before you start taking things apart.

Once refitted the car cranked back up no problem.

My description makes it sound harder than it actually is so give it a go.

Thanks adrianf for the info, sounds like even I can manage that one ! I will give it a go at the weekend, as I don't think its been changed for a long long time.
