Thesimplesignman,

There's been all kinds of horror stories elsewhere over the difficulty of changing the glow plug - basically seems to be the typical corrosion of nuts/bolts which have been untouched for years. Out of interest, how long did it take you to get down to the plug - any particular problems you found?

Also, I am intrigued. It seems necessary to clear the codes before the heater will restart but I thought that the car management system would retry the heater anyway - in other words, if you fix the heater and just leave it, will the management system just 'learn' that the heater is now working?

I am buying a VAG-COM interface and have downloaded the software, ready to try it out, but if I can avoid fiddling with the 'computers' then I'll be a happier bunny.

(Yes, I work in the IT industry and yes, if I can avoid adjusting anything in the software, I will ! The car knows best, honestly ...)

Oh, incidentally, received a copy of the TIS last night. Well worth the

From reading around on the subject VAG COM may not neccessarily show the glow plug at fault. Mine had been in lock-out since I bought it, once I managed to talk to it with VAG-COM it had repeated flame out errors. The official line on this error is replacement of the metering pump or complete unit, but many have found changing the glow plug + clean out have solved the problem, indicating that the glow plug has not failed but become less effective.

Since I re-enabled mine it worked fine for 3 months, with one or two smoke effect instances but then a couple of weeks ago locked out again. I foolishly cleared the faults again only to be treated to constant smoke screens... I am going to replace the glow plug and clean the heater out, but I've got to wait to recover from my hernia op first!

I have yet to work out which glowplug to replace it with as ekta quotes 7DO 963 319 but people have mentioned updated versions... plus gasket kits.

Gordon,

'Snap' on the 'Flame out' DTC - see my post here Booster flame out DTC fixed

Change the booster glow plug and clear the DTC (forget gaskets as you're not going to dismantle that far :D )

Regards,

Jeff.

Thanks Andy,

I took the plunge on Saturday and, like you, about 2 1/2 hours - couple of tough bolts to remove but the key is plenty of WD40 and patience, methinks.

I have changed the glowplug but the heater still doesn't start. My VAG-COM 3.11 doesn't recognise many modules, none of which relate to the heater in any case, so now I'm just driving around and hoping that the heater will suddenly startle itself into life.

Could you confirm for me the age of your Gal (mine's a 97R 87BHP) and which module the heater's on? Somebody told me address 18 but there's nothing there (perhaps the module's faulty as well?)

Thanks for the info..

John

PS I jumped in and did the glowplug first - wish I had had the patience to follow the diagnostic procedure in the TIS - it might have been something else...

Mine wouldn't talk to the Aux Heater until I had the engine running. I'm using VAG COM 311.2N.

Which is one of the reasons why I didnt think I had one fitted!

Thanks Gordon,

I'll check - version 311.2n (I think that's mine also)

Can you remember/confirm address 18?

I did try it with the engine running but I'll double check - I know how these things (fail to) work! :(

Yes address 18. Mine was simply the case of once I had the engine running it talked with no further issues. There are other posts where people have still struggled / failed to communicate with it even with the engine running. Pesky little wotsit!

Would any of you know if Vagcom will display the mixture readings from the lambda sensor?

I need to set up my lpg mixtures and a vagcom lead is cheaper than a gas analyzer.

OR...

Does anyone know the ins & outs of the Lektron CO.RE.GAS lambda control system? Like, which light means rich & which light means lean
