seatkid Posted January 20, 2006 Report Posted January 20, 2006 Its a piece of electronic wizardry that allows a PC to talk to the cars electronics and interrogate and generally mess about with all sorts of things like: It tells you whats gone wrong except sometimes it doesnt and sometimes tells you somethings gone wrong that hasn't. It can also be used to "enable" other "hidden" features such as the automatic electrically operated inflatable king size bed option, usually only available on export models...:D In the hands of an average Galaxy forum member it usually breaks more than it fixes.. Quote

Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 21, 2006 Report Posted January 21, 2006 but i see no numbers or letters on the sticker on my tower! ;) Working on the fact that your going to be using your desk top pc! you will need a bloody long extension lead ;) depending on where you pc is set up in relation to where you park the car  either that or drag the pc out side ;) Quote
mumof4 Posted January 21, 2006 Author Report Posted January 21, 2006 Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.......well..........guess i hadnt thought of that. ;) How long are the leads? ;) I could zip the car onto the front lawn..(reversing of course)...guess id better make sure the sensors are on so i dont hit the house and hubby find out ive moved the car... ;) ...then i could balance the pc on the window ledge....,no that wont work...guess ill have to set up the pc by the front door as i do have avery long extension cable and a 12foot extension cable for the phone.. :o ...Hmmmmmmmmmmm..What you think...yup..ill make it work!!!i dont give in to little challengeds like this.....but do i need to get the cable b4 i download vc? Quote
malcolm.dobell Posted January 21, 2006 Report Posted January 21, 2006 Does your computer runs Windows XP? If so use USB - it would be unusual not to have USB on a machine with XP. On any normal computer 5 years old or less running Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, Windows XP you can be confident of USB. The alternatives probably have cabel length restrictions; for USB it's 5 metres, although I have no idea how long VAG.Com cabels are! Running on a desktop with a lead to the car will be a challenge. look out for injuries for when you trip over one or other of the leads. Chasing from one t'other will keep you fit, but as my wife is also a mum of 4 she doesn't need anything else to keep her fit!!! Quote
mumof4 Posted January 21, 2006 Author Report Posted January 21, 2006 Yes i am running on windows XP...i know the feeling of running round constantly in circles with 4 kids!! Never ending. ;) .Im beginning to think that this is going to be one big challenge to overcome now! ;) .Not sure what im letting myself in for...but..someone has to look after our car...hubby just drives it.But he has promised me that when i pass my test i can do all thr driving THEN i can lift the bonnet. From what ive read i dont have to lift the bonnet to use vag com so he cant blast me for it!! ;) :o ;) Quote
mumof4 Posted January 21, 2006 Author Report Posted January 21, 2006 Mind you....i do lift the bonnet to check all the various fluid levels and to check the oil as hubby seems to be incapable of doing it!!.last time i checked the oil there was none in it!!hes a pleb sometimes. Quote

MattyD Posted January 24, 2006 Report Posted January 24, 2006 I guess it's a fairly basic question, but where do I plug my soon-to-arrive vag-com cable into the veeehiccle? I know where the connector is on my VWgolf because the cover's fallen off, but my Galaxy hasn't lost enough trim for it to be visible yet! Yours, in anticipation, Matt Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 24, 2006 Report Posted January 24, 2006 On the lower dash, drivers side between the steering column and the a post  Quote
Guest JohnP Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 Following this thread with interest, like others, I've sent for the TIS, have order the cable and identified where the the socket is. Unlike MumOf4, I have sorted out a laptop, so at least I won't be revving the engine then running back into the house to see what happenend ! You don't need the lead to download the software but, apart from looking at it, there's nothing else you can do with it. It checks the COM / USB port to see if there's a car on there. No car, no functionality. Also, there's no serial number given for buying a licence (!) until you have successfully connected to a car. So who has gone down this route ? What chassis should I set for the Galaxy - the closest on offer is the VW Sharan and, unless I hear otherwise, that's where I'll start..... Kepp me posted on what you get up to - my project is to fix the booster heater - I am told that you have to clear the fault codes but I am not convinced.... JohnP Quote
Guest thesimplesignman Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 Hi John P It worked for me!! changed the glow plug on my aux heater then cleared codes with vag com It works just fine now... Quote
