Guest darkstar Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 Just a quickie, checked the ATF on my gal today and it was a little low.. what was more frightening is the state of the stuff that came out when I topped it to the correct level. It's obviously prompted a change of atf, so....... where the bloody hell is the drain plug?!? don't tell me you have to drop the entire sump?... BTW, it's a '96 v6. Cheers Steve Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 How did you check the level? Quote
Guest darkstar Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 How did you check the level? Car on a level.. warm up the fluid (about 40 - 45 degrees) and pull the level check bolt.. top up till it starts to dribble out of the bolt hole <_< You've managed to make me nervous though.. why do you ask? Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 Because you've already found the drain plug and I was just checking <_< the drain plug is the same as the level plug you need to remove the overflow tube by using the same size allen key as you used to remove the drain plug, remove the plug and then insert the allen key into the drain tube and undo it Quote
Guest darkstar Posted January 17, 2006 Report Posted January 17, 2006 Because you've already found the drain plug and I was just checking  the drain plug is the same as the level plug you need to remove the overflow tube by using the same size allen key as you used to remove the drain plug, remove the plug and then insert the allen key into the drain tube and undo it I didn't think to stick the allen key up the shaft... Doh!!! Don't suppose you know where in VAG Com it tells you the ATF level do you? Steve Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 17, 2006 Report Posted January 17, 2006 It doesn't it only tells you the fluid temperature, then when that reaches between 35/45C you undo the level cap and see if any drains out? if it does it's overfilled  if it doesn't? then you top it up till it does ;) Quote
bigdaddy Posted January 17, 2006 Report Posted January 17, 2006 Is there a special ATF for the ford ,,,,,, only asking as we have a comma ATF fluid at work and it says on the can suitable for fords?????,,,,,am I safe to use this,,,or should I go to ford  Quote
Steven.Langdale Posted January 17, 2006 Report Posted January 17, 2006 I ponder this one now and then, change or not change the atf..... Is yours the AG4 gearbox? I would think so. This is the same as the VW 0M1 (i'm pretty sure). There is quite a lot on the net about changing the fluid on these. If they are the same box, the "filled for life" really means filled for the life of the warranty. lots of people (mostly yanks it has to be said) change the fluid AND the filter by droppind the sump. Judging by some of the pictures it's probably a good idea too. Take a look here: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?cmd=print&id=1064342 It leads of to some interesing reading. as for the fluid, as long as you get the correct Ford/VW spec you should be OK, but being a bit of a scared-e-cat (sp), i'd pay the extra and get it from the dealer  Let us know how you get on.
