Hi there, I have a '96 VR6 Galaxy and I'm having problems with the little computer thing on the dash. The oil temp reading works, as does the miles to next fillup but the mpg, current speed and timer (that's what I assume it is) don't seem to work.

I've hooked vag com up to it to see if any sensors are reading 0, but all seems to be OK. I found the real-time speed sensor and although it's reading in kph, it does register the correct speed. I do have a problem where the cruise control doesn't work which I attributed to the above issues, but after reading previous posts, I'm off to look for vac hoses <_<

Anyone got any ideas on the display? for the record, the mpg reads --.- the mph reads --- and the timer reads 0:00.

Cheers

0 mpg - isnt that about right for a VR6? :)

wait.....just reread your post.....

you got..

--.- mpg i.e. >99.9mpg

--.- mph i.e. >99.99mph average

0:00 time i.e. instantaneous

Congratulations! you've got the first starship on the planet, instantaneous transport at an mpg that puts mine to shame.

Spooky or what?

Alternatively you could switch to impulse power and drive around a bit and then recheck your computer, it takes around two hundred metres before the first reading comes up <_<

There's always one isn't there... :)

As a side note, the vac pipe had perished, but after remaking the connection, still no c/control. is it usual for the side under the wing to have gone too ?

Any ideas on whether or not the aforementioned issues would affect cruise would be appreciated as I'm not sure whether or not I'm chasing a sensor issue or a vac pump/pipe issue...

My criuse control broke for the same reason - cracked pipe at the pump. Fixed that and it worked fine for 3 to 4 months. Now it has broke again but the fault is elswhere. The pump and the pipe are OK this time. Anyone any suggestions?

Check the hoses up under the dash, also check all the brake and clutch switches are ok?

in my experience cruise control fails 99% of the time due to the vacuum pipe(s) to the cc pump (behind n/s indicator) perishing.

Does that mean removing the inner wing cover on a mk1?

No, just remove the indicater lense, undo the screw, that holds it in place ,dont remove it fully! then pull it out of the wing, there is a fairly large cavity behind there that holds the pump

thats a really backward step.... can it be switched on with a clever sommat?

i cant believe the computer cant actually do the function - not worth vw/ford while to have diff computers.
