bigdave982 Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 Hi ,Ivve just bought a 97 tdi 90 bhp with 90,000 on the clock, what sort of performance is "normal"?On a straight and level bit of motorway I can get around 85-90 but as soon as it hits a bit of a gradient this is dropping off to around 70 Swanscombe cutting and Wrotham hill on the moerway stretches see 65 and dont seem to be happy!!! Is this normal Before you all start I know its not a race car ,but even so......Plus it seems to be very noisy in the cabin ,a lot of engine roar any advicce greatly appreciateddave Quote
suzuki91 Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 my 97 tdi will go 90 all day, up inclines with out slowing. i don't go any quicker than that, but there is still some in reserve. it now has 170 thou on the clocks. Quote
_dg Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 Mines petrol, but with a full load I have to turn off the aircon for a bit more power going up a steep hill. Quote
seatkid Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 what sort of performance is "normal"? I have a 90bhp TDi.<_< It is capable of 100mph indicated on the straight and a comfortable 90mph including reasonable gradients. The lack of performance you describe is a classic symptom of MAF sensor failure (mine did exactly the same and eventually it gets worse....). Either replace it with a new one ( Quote
zman Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 my v6 hums quietly at 90 and is quite happy with what ever i wish to cruise at.. hills not a prob.. in fact she eats them... yeah.. mpg can be shite... but damn the feeeeelin' from the v6 makes up for that. <_< Quote
Guest galaxysam Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 tried my V6 on the toll road the other day was quiet so gave it a bit of a blast, seemed quite happy into 3 figures, still hada a load to go as well, by the way they class Gals as cars on there so you only pay car prices at the tolls and not van prices. Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 And if you clever you can get your van through the auto booth as a car  be careful on the south bound exit  after the toll booths as they sometimes set up a camera unit on one of the bridges crossing the motor way ;) Quote
GSMGuy Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 18 secs to 60... hmm, just bought our 2nd car... A nice 2005 BMW 535 TD Sport... Had it chipped yesterday..... 0-40 in about 2 seconds, 0-60 in less than 6... here's the evidence taken on my mobile...... Download the video BTW this is actual footage... Torque is now over 600 nm and bhp is around 390........ The kick in the back on kickdon is something else... Oh and YES, ~THIS IS AN AUTO!!!!! Mike Comments please...... Quote
Guest MATT Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006  god - it goes thro 0 - 40 like a rev counter lol and your doing 80 before u know it!! ace car - i want one MATT  Quote
Guest tonycoates Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 BMW buyers got it right, no way were they going to go deisel until a decent unit was offered. Galaxy owners however are perfectly happy with very basic lumps, so ford and voltswagen will be happy to supply them. Still it must be fun on long journeys taking bets as to wether it will make it up the hills. If we v6 drivers are loosing time refueling every 400 miles, surely tdi drivers are loosing that advantage while they wait at the tops of the hills, for the family to walk up, carrying all that luggage and all. Well being a cash rich V6 driver you can afford to buy a Beamer - no doubt you will make up the difference in cost by the amount you save on the petrol you won't need using a diesel. My Diesel goes up hills no problem and also returns an average 44mpg with the Aux heater and all. Each to his own - remember the tortoise and the hare!! Quote
zman Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 gsmguy.... loved the vid.... i'm an ex bimmer driver... (330ci vert).... i posted yr message and threadon the bimmer forum i frequent.. http://forum.bmwcarmagazine.com/default.asp?CAT_ID=2 Quote

GSMGuy Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 Matt, the 0-40'ish is bloody unbelieveable... I nearly sh*t myself after it was chipped... Gets the power down well though... Was thinking of getting a sticker for the back saying "Yes It's a DIESEL AUTO!!!!" Not been outrun in the traffic light Grand Prix yet!!!!! Only thing that slows the 0-60 down is the time the box takes to change up at max revs... I may try just using full throttle rather than kickdown, but the Missus refuses to be in the car operating the stopwatch... Hence the shaky video lol... Mike Quote
Guest MATT Posted January 16, 2006 Report Posted January 16, 2006 well - from that video - your doing 40mph almost immediately! i find "sport mode" on the galaxy seems best, as kick-down seems to hold on for ever lol maybe its the same on the BMW's, but defo give full throttle ago. i cant believe you can get such performance from a diesel automatic, well impressed! widu13 Posted January 17, 2006 Report Posted January 17, 2006 Even in "normal" unchipped sheep's clothes the 535D is faster than the 535i petrol!! Mind you my 130 is faster than a 2.0! (Not too sure about the V6 mind  ) Quote
Guest MATT Posted January 17, 2006 Report Posted January 17, 2006 so - whats the point in petrol engines? i cant remember  MATT Quote

Erm.........not with my TDi 150. It tops out just shy of 130mph and once rolling has caught quite a few people out who thought they were going past the bus at the lights. Never known it slow down on a hill either. This bus is getting quite quick now the engine is loosening up with nearly 7,000 miles on - oh and for the record is still getting between 40 and 45 mpg. It is really quite good and growls nicely (not quite like a V6 though). Who would want a V6? not me unless it was a diesel :) Quote

The TDi engines produce way more torque than any V6 (V6 drivers certainly have more talk though), they obviously know naf all about diesels. Strange how most of the petrol heads seem to need to convert to another fuel and then they chuck out their apare wheel. Very sensible chaps, really cool idea, well done. The ONLY advantage of the V6 is out and out acceleration, top speed and the lovelly sound, I don't need / want the first two and the last one I'd rather listen to the radio and but up with 45 mpg on a regular basis. Have a nice day. JB Quote
