<_< WHY HELLO where do i start got another recon turbo as they (speedway.co.uk) agreed to replace it bit strange as they said it was a fitting error on my side so we put it on this morning under full instructions from them new oil new filter had new feed pipe with the 1st recon turbo primed the oil through just like they said put it back together started it up run it at tick over for 30 mins everything ok no leaks so the mechanic took it for a test drive seemed ok then i got in drove round the corner up the road half a mile then came the smoke and funny noise from turbo took it back turbos had it ha ha now im crying. rang speedways explained the situation was told its the fitting told i watched the fitting and everything was to their instructions then was told its my engine he was 1000 % sure it was my engine and they wouldnt be doing anything about it and that was that so i got on the phone to turbo tecnics authorised garrett specialist and explained to them whats gone on they tell me that the VNT turbo unit should not be recondioned as they dont last long he is sure its the turbo thats at fault not the engine they want to see the turbo that was reconed ive now got ford to do the job of supplying and fitting a new one around

Reconing a turbo is very specialist job. Indeed many people think a new turbo is the only really cost-effective way of doing it.

I have seen some very good reconditioned turbos but even those then only lasted a year or so before they failed again.

The only simple way to sort this one out is to get someone to supply and fit the turbo. If it don't work then it aint your problem. Talk to speedway again and ask them if they have a fitting agent, they 'may' be willing to help out again if their agent fits it?

At least you know that our forum members will now all steer clear of speedways turbos! You could report them to your local trading standards officer, after all they have a "12 month guarantee"

Remanufactured Turbo

A remanufactured turbo is a turbo that has been returned here, EVERY moveable part of the turbo is removed and thrown away, the casing is then machined and tested which must conform to the original specifications in every way, once this has been achieved a brand new cartridge is installed, balanced and bench tested - Sold with 12 months warranty

How can you machine a used turbo casing and it still conforms to the original specification in every way? I personally don't see how you can recon a turbo, once their gone, surely nothing is salvagable.

Do you still have the original turbo unit? What was the original fault/symptom that made you think the turbo had gone in the first place?

My recomendation to everyone is use new OEM parts or accept the consequence. New OEM parts are available from several suppliers outside the manufacturer/dealer network and are often not much more expensive than aftermarket or recon units.

well it kept going into limp mode when i first got it back in nov 2004 so changed the maf still was there but only when cold carried on using it my garage did the vag-com on it kept coming up with over boost sensor boost pressure exceded something like that but it didnt get any worse until a week before christmas and it just lost all power wouldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding so garage had a look the actuator arm didnt move plus a fair bit of in out movement on the blades so just rang round sill me took the cheapest offer as its a taxi didnt want to miss christmas trade then then thats where it started missed the christmas trade and newyears now im broke ha ha at least i will be after ford have done their bit

This wasnt a turbo fault! You had a vacuum pipe or boost control solenoid fault!

The fact that the fault was logged as an overboost and then went into limp mode verifies that the turbo operation was perfectly OK and the fault was in the boost control.

Its possible you blew the recon units with overboost. Did you check the vacuum piping? And was it connected 100% right when you put it back?

When installing a new turbo it is sensible to put a boost gauge on and check the boost is correct over a range of revs before you give it any welly.

I'm 99% certain your turbo was alright. Have you still got the original unit?

all the pipes were checked the 1st time it happened around jan or feb when it was cold then it warmed up and it didnt do it until just before christmas when we looked at it this time the actuator if thats what its called was jammed and from what ive read on the net the vains were stuck so we just assumed it was the turbo so maybe ford will test it properly this time hopefully many thanks so far your info is great
