MatTdi Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Happy new year to you all.... My Alhambra failed the MOT today :P The fail sheet states:Excessive play in OSF track rod end ball jointExcessive chaffing on osf brake hose I have not been able to have a visual check yet but will do tonight.Does any of the above sound expensive? and can it be done by myself or will it need a garage? Thanks in advance as ever M@ Quote
soptom Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 That's an impossible question to answer, if you are a trained mechanic with unlimited tools, it will be easy for you, if you have as much mechanical aptitude as a small turtle and have no tools, no you won't be able to do it.Replace ball joint, replace brake hose. Not big jobs but obviously easier and more expensive for a garage to do them. Quote
MatTdi Posted January 5, 2006 Author Report Posted January 5, 2006 well enough knowledge and tools to service it, change discs and pads and half my aircon.... I have never had to change a track rod end before, are they twist off once you have seperated the joint?? or is it on TIS as I dont have mine with me at work.... Thanks in advance Quote

Undo nut at wheel end, and slacken nut on steering rack end. Knock wheel end out with a hammer and unscrew out of steering rack end. When you fit the new part you will need to retrack (adjust the toe-in). Use a good place with laser alignment equipment. Alternatively let them do the whole job. Mine cost Quote
Masked Marauder Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 Can't add much to SK's input. Just that they are handed so make sure you get the right one for the correct side. It will be sold as the right hand and should be marked "R" Quote
Guest MATT Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 i had a new track rod end & drop link at my last service. they showed me the bits, and what was wrong with them, under the car (car was 6" in the air lol. doesn't look too complicated, just heavy metal lol MATT Quote
MatTdi Posted January 13, 2006 Author Report Posted January 13, 2006 Well the bits are changed and she's passed!!! The TRE came off real easy, I just need to get it tracked, the Brake hose was more difficult to change as the pipe unions did not want to come undone, but after a bit of swearing it all came apart. Toppped up the fluid and bled the breaks all is well. Just need fix my aircon again!! Thanks as ever M@ Quote
seatkid Posted January 13, 2006 Report Posted January 13, 2006 Just need fix my aircon again!! Undo the nut at the u know what.....hmmph....use a large hammer.....uh...and belt it hard! Sorry! ;) A/c faults get me that way..... Quote
johnb80 Posted January 13, 2006 Report Posted January 13, 2006 Toppped up the fluid and bled the breaks all is well. How do you bleed breaks, never done that one, my experience has been limited to brakes and clutches  Quote
