Alternator, Battery Or Something More Serious

hi

i've had a bit of a search but found nothing to help so here goes.

I have a 2001 1.9 TDI galaxy and there seems to be an intermittent electrical problem. The problem shows itself initially with the ABS and airbag light coming on followed quickly by the dash starting to flash on and off and then general spurious failure lights. I then stopped and turned the engine off and the battery seemed flat and would not start. A jumpstart went first time.

when it happened a couple of weeks ago the "WORKSHOP ALTERNATOR" caution was displayed so i had someone check the brushes and all was well, output 14.1 if i remember correctly and the battery was taking 13.9.

between the two occasions i had done about 500 miles.

any info would be greatly appreciated as it's going to cost a few quid to change any of the components so i've got to get it right.

Many thanks

Happy new year

I recommend checking your main fuse feed box under your bonnet...is a wee black box.we had this prob and it was caused by a blown fuse which then affected everything else.A loom also got melted in the process by the fuse arcing on the alternator fuse+...lot of heat generated!!.ours is a 2001 galaxy.

had the same on my galaxy tdi on new years eve, problem was the main fuse box in front of battery, nearest one to battery is 150 amp and had dry joint causing overheating which had made fuse brittle and it had broken under cable 10mm nut, the cable can be identified as its the thickest, the fuses do look ok so don't be fooled, kind regards Dave

Just pop along to your local tyre/battery place (halfords if you must) and they will check your battery foc.

I think you'll find you have a duff battery.....

Is there an echo in here?...

Im glad someone agrees with me Sharpies!.Ours was that fuse also....garage told us that we were lucky more damage wasnt done to the engine because of the overheating.cost us 140 to repair because of the loom melting due to the excessive heat.! :P We replaced the main fuse feed box ourselves but im banned from working on the car as i tried to repair the cd changer and couldnt fix it , so it had to go to the garage to get the loom done! :D
