I've seen them advertised on ebay before but always thought, "whats the point" when you can get something better from the likes of Tom Tom, Navman etc that sits up on your dash (in a safer, easier to read position than down in the dash), can be taken from car to car and when you sell your car you dont need to leave your sat Nav in it.

Not 100% sure about the wiring but I would think you could just plug & play with the Navigation unit. Its double din sized the same as the standard Ford headunit and if the kit on ebay has the antenna & wiring for it I'd be pretty certain that you will be able to just slot it into your car.

....kind of agree here..... We have a Garmin unit that I can interchange between our two cars and my Bike...... plus it was half the price of the Ford one....!

The Mapping is usualy updated yearly and covers all of Europe, and typically works out at about

We don't give wrong directions, you just don't listen to the right ones :D

Yeh and still ends up going around in circles not having a clue where youve been or where your going :P :D :o

Now that i have to agree is very true :o But i do find now, that when i need to read my atlas, its like a jigsaw as they are all well used and a bit tattered, sometimes ive had to use two atlas to make one page!! for some reason, they all have pages missing, is this where i am going wrong??.They really should make em more robust and make them able to stand being thrown out the window and stomped on..not that ive ever done that mind :o

That's where you're wrong ...... the standard Ford head unit is 1.75 DIN and the Navi is double DIN so you have to change the surround. The connector is different so you need to buy the adapter and there is also the matter of connecting the GALA cable. As far as looking down to read the map, you don't have to as all the directions are fed to the FIS between the tacho and speedo plus verbal instructions.

Oh and the FIS ....... has to be Ghia spec.

umm..you can fit a double din in without changing owt.i fit a double din head unit into the galaxy i had.

mmmmm ...... remember this from Gadgetoid?

LOL.

I see the blind are leading the blind here.

Time to shed some light on the subject:

The standard Ford Audio ( 5000RDS, 6006E, etc.. ) is 1.75DIN

The SatNav unit is double DIN. And it is really a rebadged VW / Blaupunkt unit so the plugs are different and will need converters.

It is a fairly simple job to remove the air con control, radio, cup holders and switch gear from your existing facia. Then remove the three screws that hold it in ( 1 in each cup holder slot and one at the back of the radio slot)

Then replace everything in the new facia you will have just bought from Ford to fit the SatNav. The part number you need is F1319217. Only

Okay....think I'll buy a portable one (I don't have a Ghia). Is it right the new tom tom ones play mp3s and have an fm transmitter? That would sort out the ipod bit, just without the ipod  and guess we can play I Spy all the way to the Algarve or use a strap on...DVD player.

I'm useless with maps, I like gadgets and I also know if I were to look down at a map I might well crash.

Or I could go and get one of those lovely Kenwood things I've seen.....might need a 2nd mortgage though

Yep the TomTom 520, 720 and the One series all play MP3's via the Jukebox and you can transmit this to your car radio via the built in FM transmitter. I bought the 520T a while back when I changed the car which incorporates a built in TMC module and advanced bluetooth so you don't have to touch your mobile. It also has an SD card expansion slot so you can stick 4Gb's worth of music on it and not have to worry about changing cd's etc. The only thing I'm not keen on is the quality of the FM transmitter where you lose quality of sound but you can still feed an audio line out into the stereo if you have that facility. Your Ipod will connect to it if you spend a little on an adapter.
