Guest curly Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 Hi My 1999 2.3 auto seems to have developed an intermittent fault! Sometimes when I start the car everything is normal, ticks over fine etc.. until I select R or D! then as the touque convertor takes the strain the revs labour and the car stalls! It does this usually twice then runs ok.. Has anyone got any ideas?? Is it electrical or mechanical???????? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 Reminds me of my parents' car from many years ago - single carb auto; often needed to adjust the idle speed in the summer. With modern electronic systems, adjusting the idle speed isn't as simple as half-a-turn on a readily-accessible screw under the bonnet though. Sounds like an electronic problem somewhere - incorrect or wrong signal from something, or incorrect idle speed being requested. Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 Try cleaning throttle plate, throttle body and ICV. Check for blocked/holed pipes from PCV and any vacuum pipes. Other possibility is bust Throttle pot...ECU doesn't know it's at idle. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 Ah yes - remember now - place I used to work at, bloke on next desk to me had this problem with a Volvo 850 petrol auto. A good clean of the throttle body assemby fixed his stalling problem so this must be worth a try. Quote
Guest Michael Posted August 13, 2003 Report Posted August 13, 2003 I had this problem on a '96 V6. The car had been fine up to the day I did my first engine oil change and dropped the fuel pump fuse while priming the oil system ( I had been used to changing the oil on a turbo-diesel). After the oil change I took the thing for a drive and the shift was jerky and lumpy and the next morning the stalling problem started. Took it to local dealer and after Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted August 13, 2003 Report Posted August 13, 2003 Have you tried putting it in "D" or "R" with the front wheels raised off the ground (on stands or a substantial trolley jack) and seeing if the stalling still occurs? Quote
Guest curly Posted August 15, 2003 Report Posted August 15, 2003 Thanks for the advice guys! I reckon I'll do a little spring cleaning around the throttle body, although I have a gut feeling it may be electrical after talking to my local Ford dealer [ Selby Ford excellent small freindly dealership ]! Nothing is too much trouble and they have even diagnosed probs for me free of charge!! My Galaxy has the stalling symtoms when either hot or cold, and the idle speed is always spot on... so if anyone has any other ideas please post!! Quote
