Redbird Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003  Well it took about a month but we did it! I was experiencing the same problems as many of you - power loss on inclines in fourth or fifth gears - no trouble on the flat. My local Ford (Allen Ford Upminster) replaced the MAF sensor, three fuel injectors and the "turbo booster valve" all to no avail, and so they contacted Ford proper to get advice from on high. They were told that it was an internal fault in the turbo and that the whole turbo needed replacement. This was done and one week on it looks like this problem is sorted (famous last words). Fortunately, I'm still under warranty, otherwise I would be somewhat out of pocket. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 Any idea of how many vehicles may be affected, and build dates? Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted August 12, 2003 Report Posted August 12, 2003 Very unusual. If turbo impeller problem exists, then power is down all through rev range. Most turbo problems are seal related...in minor cases, exhaust smoke is heavier and blue. In extreme seal cases, the engine will run even after turning ignition off, and will rev above idle. Quote
Redbird Posted August 15, 2003 Author Report Posted August 15, 2003 I don't know exactly where the problem was, but I had plenty of power in gears 1-3 but was lacking on inclines in 4&5. Ford didn't specify exactly what in the turbo was wrong - I'm just overjoyed that I'm fixed (for now?). The previous owner had the problem, but it didn't occur for me until 3/4 weeks after I bought it (partially corrected by the pre-sale service?). I negotiated for a better warranty having spoken to the prior owner (I read his phone no off the service history) and that has saved me a bucket of money. I not particularly engine savvy - particularly engines with computerised management systems! - so I have no idea what the core problem was. Quote
