Hello Everyone,

Just putting my spare wheel on, but silly bollocks here has put it on upside down !!!!

As I had already wound the wheel up, I then had to wind it back down, but after a couple of windings, the ratchet kicked in and the winding nut is just spinning round now even though the wheel is at the top !!!!

Can't fathom out why.

WHY ME !!!!!

Now a 2 minute job is going to take me hours, YET AGAIN !!!!

Please can anybody help.

Thanks

Phil

He he he (sorry)

If you can reach past the wheel, the whole spare wheel assembly is held on to the chassis by two bolts. Or maybe you can turn the wheel and get a socket on the bolts through an opening in the wheel?

Good luck!

The wheel holder/carrier/windy-up-thingy  is not easily disassembled, so if the winding nut just spins and you can't get it to thread back in you'll be in for a new one...

Got the assembly off, looks like I'll be running around without a spare wheel for a while !!!!!

Hi Phil,

Welcome to the KSWCC (Knackered Spare Wheel Carrier Club)

Mine screwed up on me about a month ago and is currently sitting on the garage floor. I have tried to disassemble it but despite drilling all the rivets out it still refuses to come apart

I think at some time in its previous life, some tyre monkey wound it up with an airgun judging by the state of the nut.

Thanks VR6. Like I said, I knew what it was called but couldnt remember how to spell it.

With regard to the spare wheel, my recent puncture was the first I have had for about 10 years or more.

I previously had a Pug309 in which I did over 150K in 6 years without a puncture and I doubt that I would have been able to get the spare off.

I was reading through the T&Cs of my Britannia Rescue cover the other day and there is a clause that allows them to charge you IF you havent got a serviceable spare wheel.

I would expect you could get away with it if the spare had a puncture but a missing spare or an illegal tyre could end up costing you.

Regards

Keith

...Had it ocurred to you to just NOT call them if you have a puncture, and carry a can of goo instead.

My Galaxy Spare wheel carrier seems to have gone the way of all of them.   Whose idea was it to use plastic parts to hold such a heavy wheel in place.

Has anyone any idea where to get one other than a main dealer?  I could try a scrap yard but, since mine has broken the first time it has been moved in 6+ years the one in the scrap yard is probably just waiting to break.

if its still fitted on the scrappy 1 then test it,

other wise look on ebay.

I assume you have a MKII.  If you get a wheel carrier from a MKI it will fit using the same mounting holes and has no plastic parts. I wire brushed and hammerited mine as well as greasing the mechanism before fitting.

I got mine from ebay (new MKII ones are available from ebay too).

Thanks for info re Mk!! Carrier. Regarding the comments on this subject about price I have been quoted £96 + VAT by Ford but, since this car is actually a VW Sharan I rang VW and was quoted £185 + VAT and SEAT (same as Alhambra) quoted £195 + VAT so actually, although this bracket shouldn't break in the first place at least Ford are only half the price.

i work for a certain nationwide breakdown service & i can't tell you how frustrating it is when cars don't have a spare wheel ... either because the driver hasn't bothered having the last puncture repaired or just hasn't got 1, the manufacturer only supplies a can of snott or it's got pressure sensors in the wheels. pretty much the same when you go to get the spare out & the bolt/winch/whatever just spins or is siezed.

if we're lucky, the puncture is on the wheel that will go into the recovery gear, otherwise it's a case of swapping wheels round before loading & towing to the garage.

snott is ok if the puncture is across the tread, but if it's on the shoulder or sidewall, then it can't be used. tyre shops hate it, especially on alloys, because it takes a while to clean off the rim.

if fitted with sensors, then the manufacturer doesn't fit a spare.

sometimes, we can use our discretion, remove the wheel, run down to a local tyre shop with the customer, wait for it to get changed, return & fit to car.

very often, siezed bolts for the wheel carrier is down to poor maintenance ... a quick smear of copper grease on the threads when the car is serviced, or spray with wd40 usually keeps things moving.

a good servicable spare is essential, as is knowing how to change the wheel & actually doing it!!!! you'd be amazed how many people would rather wait up to an hour for us to come out, especially if they've got an appointment or meeting & risk being late, rather than change the wheel themselves.

yeah i have that crap in my car, trying to locate a decent spare i can keep in the car,as mine are 18"alloys.there are lots of peeps who have bought a spare BUT the 1 thing they havnt done is to make sure its the correct loading for the mk3/smax as these cars all weigh nearly 2 tonnes.

asp if you know of a suitable spare near by plz give me a shout.
