Clutch ? Or Something Else ?

Ive started to notice that occasionally, not always, but typically when cold.

I accelerate as normal and the rev counter revs high by about 400revs then goes back to norm whilst accelerating. Sort of like a clutch slipping I suppose. Best way I can mimic it is if I accelerate then press slightly on the clutch and the rev goes up, then release clutch and it goes back to normal.

This only happens occasionally and not in all gears, can't check really cos of the intermittent nature of fault.

Any Ideas ? Bit quick for the clutch to go aint it ? Only do long journeys, occasionally

Thanks !

Clutch slip due to wear will generally only happen in the higher gears; stick it in top as early as possible and then accelerate hard, it should slip if it's worn.

The alternative scenario is that there is a fault with the clutch. It's possible to glaze the clutch with systematic abuse, this overheating can also cause the flywheel face to pick up or even crack up. Sometimes the pressure plate can beak some of the spring fingers, once one or two go then you can lose significant pressure, this will tend to feel like a worn clutch. repeated slippage will eventually lead to flywheel damage.

30K sounds low, but can you guarantee that the car hasn't been used for towing heavy loads in hilly areas? Or that someone hasn't 'ridden' the clutch from new! Some idiots will hold the car on a hill on the clutch until it starts to smell and smoke, this causes glazing and lots of wear.

Get it looked at...

Apply the hand brake, drop it into fourth gear, then at 2000RPM and try to pull away! if it stalls clutch is ok  if it slips and the revs increase  clutch is on its way out or plates contaminated or sticking servo? either way get it checked out
