Bigjeeze Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 I am being driven slowly nuts by a noise coming from the discs/brake callipers. Basically as I drive along I get a whistling mild scraping type noise which dissapears if I dab the brakes but comes back again after a few minutes. I have replaced the discs & pads about 10K miles ago, I have looked at the Callipers and pads - everything seems fine - the tyres are fine the rims look OK and all in all I can't see anything obviously wrong. The only thing I can think of is that maybe the callipers need a bit of copper slip or something on them as they may not be releasing properly or something. Other than that is it possible this is a wheel bearing at all? They don't move when you rock them, there is no free play - I don't know what it is!! Can anyone help? Quote
Guest TDiAds Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 More than likely its just that the pads need regreasing to be honest, remove the pads on both sides clean them up with a wire brush and make sure the section on the calipers where the pads rest is clean and free of deposits, scrape it with a screwdriver before rubbing down with a wire brush, then give the back of the pads a good coating of copperslip and also on the edge of the pads where it again rests on the caliper, re-assemble and all should be noise free. If theres no movement in the wheel then chances are its not a wheel bearing, if there was movement you would more than likely hear a deep rumbling aswell to be honest........hope ive helped a little  Quote

Thanks for the advice - it's gratefuly received!! Quote
El Dingo Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 Mine just squeal under light braking. I must admit that it irritates me mildly, but not enough to get out and take the wheels off in this cold weather (and anyway, the wife drives it mostly - it's her car...). When we bought it in August, the dealer fitted new front discs and pads, and I assumed that the squeal would disappear when they bedded in. Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted December 13, 2005 Report Posted December 13, 2005 Guys, check that the disc guard has not been distorted slightly. This often happens when discs and pads are changed, the mechanic probably forgot to straighten it. Quote
