Hi I noticed this morning that the reversing lights on my TDi 2000 V reg gal didn't work.

Then I noticed neither was the hi level brake light or when tested the rear fog lights.

The number plates light up, so do the brake lights in the rear clusters and the indicators.

The rear wash works but the wiper is a bit slow.

I looked in the users manual and I far as I could see they are all on different fuses. What is going on? Could several fuses blow all at the same time? Or is there some connection between these circuits that could be faulty?

Help much appreciated as it has it's MOT test at the end of Dec.

Oh and anyone looking for a new rear exhaust box and middle section should try FastFix, they quoted me

could be the wiring between the tailgate and the car,i think this is prone to failure where it passes through the rubber grommets

Be warned,

If you lose the power feed to the tail gate you will be unable to open it easily. If you suspect the loom where it fails at the hinge then remove the rear panel untill you have sorted problem, at least you will be able to open the tail gate in the event of the power cable breaking.

Check it out ASAP .

just a small correction hi-level brake lights are a testable item, unless the tester can see that there are no wires going to it

Yep your quite correct. Mine was not working last MOT, I guess the tester missed it. The wires on mine were burnt right though in the boot lid. Had to rewire it.

Also found that I only had one rear fog light, the other had a blanking plate, even though it had a lamp holder.

Soon popped that out and fitted a bulb though.

If this problem of wires breaking in the tailgate is common, has anyone been back to their main dealer to complain of a design fault and get it fixed free of charge?

I still believe in fairy tales and happy endings.

It's a common problem across a whole range of cars! it's not just a Galaxy thing

 my MK2 Golf suffers from it :o as did my XR4X4 and my old Ascona SRE :P

why not do it yourself, all you need is the same size cable and a soldering gun and insulation tape, done it on my gal never had any problems after, and it will save you a load of dosh aswell

Better with heat-shrink tubing than insulating tape.

OK then how do I get to the wires?

Do they run up the rear pillar in the car or through the roof lining?

You're talking to a complete novice, so technical talk will fly straight over my head.

when you open the rear door, look up to the right hand side and you will notice a large rubber boot, the wires are in side of it,on my gal the wires that were broken were right in the middle of it so i cut the rubber boot in half and exposed the inner wires so i could see which ones were kerfunked(in nakers the rubber boot but i had no more problems after),yes mm heat shrink wouldve been better but i didnt have any at the time.

dont forget boys christmas eve is for shopping :(

Both! they run up the rear pillar above the rear light, them across to the rubber bellows, dont cut the bellows :( it clips into the hatch and car body, just twist it while pullling on it and it pop out!

I found the easiest way was to cut the tape holding the loom together, then seperate the wires, join the broken cone to a new piece of cable, leave this new piece long enough so that the joints can be tucked inside the hatch and roof or if you want to do a real good job? cut out the bad section of the loom and totally replace it right back to the pillar and into the hatch! this does mean haveing to remove the rear hatch trim panels, trim sections around the hatch opening and possibly dropping the head lineing around the rear hatch section!

one member got a replacement loom for the hatch! IIRC he said it was a pig of a job to feed through the panels! a replacement box of plasters were needed afterwards :(

Thanks gregers1 and vr6galaxy have a nice time shopping on Christmas Eve.

Unless the law has been changed and clubbing to death annoyingly dumb people in stupid flashing hats who stand around in the entrances to shop or wander around gormlessly not having a clue where or what they want is legal? then NO I wont enjoy shopping :(
