aye, thats whys it called an intermitant fault :D next time it happens dont switch off the engine get someone to check the brake lights? maybe the guy sitting in the drivers seat of the car in your boot could check them

if its dropped into limp home mode then it should have left a fault code? get it read and go from there

If the fault is intermitant and she restarted the car it will revert to full operation till it has the need to switch over to limp home mode, so if she stuck her foot on the brake pedal and disturbed the switch causing it to work ok again then the problem is solved as far as the ECU is concerned till the next time!

the same applies when you unplug the MAF the ECU reverts back a known set of parameters and allows the engine run abiet under powered, when you plug the MAF back in the fault reoccurs and the ECU then runs using the signals it gets from the faulty MAF

Not by any chance a drive by wire problem? i.e. u/s potentiometer from the accelerator ?

The above of course assuming that yours is DBW
