Guest r9rav Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 Hi All, I have a Ford Galaxy 1.9TDi 1997 and recently the engine stuggles and then cuts out whilst driving. If I push the cluth and rev it up it stays working. But it chugs a bit then eventually stops. I then get the squiggly orange line. Managed to get the car back but when I turn on the car, the line is gone. RAC does the check with the computer but nothing appears. Have a service done nothing appeared there. But it stills happens. Does anyone have an similar experiences and can suggest what could be cuasing this. Rav Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 Check the brake lights are working? if not try resetting the switch? the brake light switch also controls the fuel pump, shutting it down when you brake, if it's faulty the ECU gets a bad signal and shuts down the pump hence the lack of power! Masked Marauder Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 Yep, good test is to put the handbrake on, rev the engine with the car in neutral to about 2000rpm then press the brake pedal. The revs should drop to about 100rpm. Quote

Surely it wouldn't control the fuel pump, engine management yes but fuel pump? If it had control over the fuel pump the engine wouldn't be able to idle if you kept your foot on the brake? Are you back in the motherland now? jetlagged maybe? Regards - JB Quote

The fuel cut off is disabled and fueling returns to idle flow rates if you press the clutch in. Quote
Masked Marauder Posted December 2, 2005 Report Posted December 2, 2005 It doesn't on mine :o Perhaps not but the original post was about a 1997 TDi Quote
johnb80 Posted December 3, 2005 Report Posted December 3, 2005 Wrong clue, mines AUTO and thus no clutch :o I did try it last night, Rev to 2000, brakes on drops to tickover. If you then take your foot off the accelerator and then press it down again it will rev quite happily with the brakes on. Not quite sure what use it would be other than you could get home if the brake light switch stuck on. Regards - JB Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted December 3, 2005 Report Posted December 3, 2005 This disscussion was had elsewhere as well, IIRC the use of the brakes also drops the vacuum and hence the loss of turbo boost? I think this was found out by Seatkid when he suffered a vacuum pipe joint/union failure? all I can say is that this does happen on my VW T5 130 and brake light failure was found to be the cause of my loss of power and running problems :o Quote
