Since the onset of the cold weather my Gal (1.9TDi Ghia) has been a bit reluctant to start (more than a couple of cranks) however when it does a funny little "beep" comes from somewhere behind the dashboad. (Note this doesn't occur when it fires up nice and quick).

Does anyone know what this is? (or is it just my car telling me to naff off cause it's too cold :D ).

Is my car telling me something?

Yes. Beeps signify fault codes - IIRC five beeps = faulty crankshaft position sensor

But....

Beeps are also caused by a low battery. Your poor starting/beeps may be a sign your battery is about to die. Is it old? Is it fully charged, topped up etc etc?

Also see This thread and this thread concerning glow plugs which also are a cause of cold start problems.
