Guest blurple headed warrior Posted November 25, 2005 Report Posted November 25, 2005 hi,i have a 1998 2.3 ghia auto with a starting problem.having read previous threads in the search section on this problem i decided to get the gal into the garage to have the inhibitor switch (p/n switch) replaced. on getting the car back today all was fine until my wife took it out.she herself has noticed a difference in that gear selection is now clunky and jerky as in from park to drive the car surges forwards.also couldn't start in park but started in neutral, the problem we had before.anyone had the same happen to them? i hope the garage hasn't made things worse than what they are!any help would be appreiciated.thanks Quote
Denis Posted November 25, 2005 Report Posted November 25, 2005 I used to have a problem starting my T reg auto, sometimes the selector lever needed pushing sideways to make it start. The cure was slight up/ down adjustment if the inhibitor sensor. It's not a switch but an infra red emitter and receiver that detects the position of the selector- this has a slotted plate at the bottom that blocks the beam in certain positions. The worst problem misalignment or failure of the inhibitor sensor could cause is failure to start or allowing you to turn the starter over when in gear, once you've started the car everything should be normal. I can't imagine why you have the clunky/ jerky problems now?? Quote
Guest blurple headed warrior Posted November 25, 2005 Report Posted November 25, 2005 thanks denis, just been out to see for myself. the jerky bit i mean is when i put it in drive it wants to go sharpish if you understand what i mean.its different than before we never had that much 'creeping' feeling.also selection of gears seems stiffer than before??as i said ive been out for myself and it managed to start first time in park but once home i started playing in p and n turning on and off and a couple of times it wouldn't start again!on top of this i cannot select gears 3,2 or 1 now :) what the hell is going on now ???????????????
