Guest peter279 Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 Hi to you all,Has anyone experienced an overheated auto gearbox whilst towing a caravan?Ive got a 1999 tdi zetec auto galaxy, which pulled my bailey scopio twin axle caravan as if it wasn`t there, most impressed with the power and still 25mpg.but whilst being 200 miles in to my journey the gearbox started to miss 4 gear and rather stay in 3rd! then at one time it did`nt want to leave first gear!. Then after letting the engine cool for a while the fault had gone. i then drove the car solo on holiday for 300 miles with no problems intill my return journey where it done the same by holding 3rd gear. since this holiday the car has done a further 2000 miles with no faults.i have spoken to fords who don`t seem to be able to advise me what went on with the gearbox, so i contacted a auto transmission garage who said you have overheated your gearbox due to having a small cooler not really up for towing and recommened a addition one.has any one had a similar problem.cheerspete Quote

Guest MATT Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 similar story... i have not had any trouble with my X reg Auto 1.9TDI galaxy, but in the past, i had a similar fault with my Auto Granada, the gearbox overheated and broke  so Quote
Guest andeee Posted November 23, 2005 Report Posted November 23, 2005 I had the same problem with my 115 Tdi auto when towing but it only happened after being in stop/start traffic, once on the M25 then again queueing into Paris. I thought it was the MAF playing up and the whole sorry tale was posted on this site about October last year. It is not possible to fit an extra cooler such as a Kenlowe system but I had a transmission fluid flush before this years trip and made much more use of the manual tiptronic and didn't encounter any further problems......with the gearbox; this year it was the air-con, but thats another story. :) Andy. Guest MATT Posted November 24, 2005 Report Posted November 24, 2005 ahhhhh, is peter not using tiptronic? i would strongly recommend using this, its miles better than letting the car pick the gear. as auto trys to change up way too soon for my liking, i found if im towing, the auto box is constantly changing up and down, its no good, use tiptronic!
