I checked up on this in the paperwork I got with my new (March 2005 05) TDI and from I can work out the first year is covered by the standard manufacturers warranty. I think this is covered by non-Ford services as long as Ford specs are followed and genuine parts used. The year 2&3 is covered only as long as Ford do the services, the implication that this is 'free' (unless you upgrade to one of the extra cost packages). So bizarrely it may be OK to have non-Ford services in the first year, but not year 2 and 3.

I may be talking complete bo110x of course, but it is certainly a grey area and would imagine you'd have a battle on your hands if something major went wrong and your service book (and computer records) are not all Ford.

I do approx 10k miles/year so will probably need a 10k, 20k (both quoted at

As of a few years ago the monopoly was abolished by EU law and Ford have to honour the warranty but Ford parts must be used and as pointed out the garage VAT registered. (Only so they can prove the mechanic is qualified.)

Not many people know this because its a closely guarded secret in the motor trade.

Under all the new block exemption rules you can have the car serviced where ever you want as long as you can show its been done to the manufacturers schedule, also you dont even have to use genuine parts, you may use pattern parts as long as they match up to the specification given by the manufacturer, this even applys to dealers, ie a Ford dealer can use pattern parts as opposed to geniune as longs as correct spec and Fraud cant touch them for it, no one will admit this you in the dealer networks but its true.
