My steering wheel makes a maddening squeaking noise.

It really only occurs in cold weather. As soon as I move the steering wheel slightly off centre it starts its squeak.

It's driving me mad. I've tried changing the rake and reach of the wheel but that does no good whatsoever.

If I pull up at the bottom of the wheel it does stop the noise but it returns as soon as I let go ............ and I can't drive around by yanking the steering wheel up at the bottom all the time.

What do I do next?

I've checked the site on the search function and a couple of folk seem to have had a similar problem but the email threads don't list how it was resolved.

I'm having a crusade on cabin noises right now and I'm starting with the most annoying - please help

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! cabin noises do my head in! everything is squeaking and rattling! i feel like filling everything with foam!

unfortunately, i haven't a clue on what it could be. ;)

Does the wheel have a little squeak only at one point in the rotation, or does it continually squeak, from lock to lock?

if you know what i mean, bit tricky to type it.

That will be your flexible coupling chap, or the bush where the steering goes through the floor.

Undo the two carpet buttons and pull the carpet out of the way and spray it all with a silicone lubricant spray.

Masked Marauder / Matt,

Thanks for the replies.

I'll try the lubricant thing but it will need to wait a week before I now get a chance. It does sound like it's coming from the top end of the steering though. Not on lock to lock but just slight left / right tweaking of the wheel.

MM, how sure are you? You know a thing or two so.......respect. But have you come across this before?

I had a bit of a squeak when I turned the wheel on my last galaxy. This was at the top of the assembly rather than the floor.

It turned out to be the 2 plastic bits that cover the steering column (not sure what they are called). they had moved up a little and were rubbing on the bottom edge of the wheel.

You could check there.
