After a long run this morning had a couple of moments when the engine 'hesitated' as if i had taken my foot of the accelerator. 10 mins later when travelling at 60 engine cuts out completetely and wont start up again. Checked the obvious, fuel tank half full, oil and coolent levels OK (had been in heavy traffic this morning and it ran a tad hotter but not near the red) left it for 2-3 mins and them started OK. got home OK but it did the hesitate thing again.

did take a 2nd or 3rd turn of the key to start this morning but it was minus 4 or so.

Sounds like an electrical problem to me - but where do I start!

Thanks for any help out there.

thanks John,

just had a good look under the relay 30 thread - looks a good place to start! can I see if the relay is suspect or is there a test or should i just look to replace it.

Hi Silverman

this sounds soooo familier, took/towed my 2.3 to the ford garage yesterday (18/11) after rining them and them saying they couldn't look at it till monday. Well they looked at it straight away ,put the diagnostics on and it pointed them to a relay i'll find out later which one and post it on here but which ever relay it was its a pain

thanks to el dingo for advice

Taxisteve, is your x reg' a mark 1 or 2 ? looking at the Handbook for my mk2 it says "Relay 30" - not used ! If it's a mark 1 do you know what function relay 30 controls? I'd like to see if has an equivalent on the Mark 2 so I can replace it before it lets me down.

thanks, had to do a long run yesterday - 400 mile round trip - stopped at service station and would not restart after a 15 min coffe break. Left it for 5 mins and then tried again OK. once on the moterway i got the judder but no cut out - phew! still its obviuos that the problem is there. Just for the record its a mk1 2000 'W'reg 2.4 ghia x. wil definately replace relay 30 as this looks the prime suspect!

looks like taxisteve had a result - hope mine is the same as in all other respects am happy with the car.

just to close this one off yep relay 30. Went to the dealer on saturday morning, picked up the part, back to car no starter! waited 15 mins but still no joy. Dealer said they would look at it on Monday and that fitting realy 30 was a dealer job as ' things needed recalibrating' decided to leave with them as I was pushed for time. Service called on Monday to day job done and relay 30 replaced. No sign of any costs for the full computer test, just
