Bigjeeze Posted November 16, 2005 Report Posted November 16, 2005 Can anyone please advise me. My Wife's Galaxy 1997 TDi seems to have a problem with the Heated front screen. When you turn it on the left hand side clears quickly but the right hand goes stripey and takes considerably longer to clear. So - is there a relay per side or something or is my wiondscreen (replaced by AW 2 years ago) knackered? Quote
bigdaddy Posted November 16, 2005 Report Posted November 16, 2005 Mine does that,,,,,but the other way around,,,,,passenger side takes 3 to 4 mins,,,,the drivers side is about 30 seconds :D Quote
katman Posted November 16, 2005 Report Posted November 16, 2005 Perhaps Bigjeeze has a windscreen from a Left Hand drive vehicle! Quote
Bigjeeze Posted November 16, 2005 Author Report Posted November 16, 2005 Perhaps Bigjeeze has a windscreen from a Left Hand drive vehicle! Or maybe I am driving on the wrong side!!! :P Should it be the side with the wheel then? :D No it's not a left hand drive - the screen was replaced a couple of years ago but this is the first time I noticed it. Any ideas? :D Quote
greg_68 Posted November 16, 2005 Report Posted November 16, 2005 The connections of the wire to the busbar running along the top and bottom edges of the screen maybe corroded. I think most windscreens are split into two sections left and right. I guess if you get a chip in your windscreen or better still a crack you will have to have it replaced. :D Quote
Ogben Schmutzel Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 Hi All, Used mine for the first time this morning and I thought it wasn't working cos no lines or anything. greg_68 Posted November 18, 2005 Report Posted November 18, 2005 I am afraid you can't they are sandwiched between the multiple layers of your windscreen, it is a very common fault on all makes of car and is caused by water ingress between the sheets usually because they have put the busbar too close to the edge of the window. MrT Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 The galaxy has three connections to the windscreen and one of these could be making a poor contact. There are 12V supplies to either side of the windscreen and these can be found running below the dash side vents by the quarterlights then up the side of the screen. The ground comes off the top middle of the screen and is a plastic flexible strip with several copper conductors in it. This is connected to a ground post in the roof lining about 5 cm away from the top middle of the screen. Check all of these connectors for good conductivity, the connectors are properly mated at both sides of the screen and check the earth strip is properly connected to the post, when my windscreen was replaced it was not. ridway Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 When I first had my gal I had the windscreen replaced. Chatting with the autowindscreen man at the time, I distinctly remember the three connections; 2 lives and a common return, it sounds like one of the +s is down. I agree with the comments, check the supply to the tails and check for good connections. Otherwise its a replacement screen or plenty of de icer Rich Quote
