El Dingo Posted November 14, 2005 Report Posted November 14, 2005 Has anyone upgraded the head unit but not the speakers? Obviously this is a cheap way of getting better sound without fiddling around in the doors and trim. I've done this in an Audi (changed the tinny dealer fit Sony for a Kenwood) and in a Seat (changed the truly awful Aura for a Alpine MP3 player and took out the standard 6CD changer). In both cases the sound was seriously improved (perhaps not audiophile) without changing the speakers. But are the speaker units up to the job? (edit - current fit is Ford 5000 with CD changer) (Originally posted in 'tech' - sorry) Quote
Guest MATT Posted November 14, 2005 Report Posted November 14, 2005 in my old galaxy (2.3 t reg) i replaced the head unit with a JVC radio/cd it worked fine, and did improve the sound to some degree. cant remember what model radio it came with though. MATT Quote
Rallim Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 I replaced the vw standard blaupunkt with an 'Los Angeles' MP3 Blaupunkt head unit, straight swap but it did require the aerial amplifier unit before it would pick up MW/LW. I bought the MP3 as I couldn't be fussed adding a disk changer and having to run cables under the seat or to the boot. Overall I am quite happy with the stock speakers, but I'm sure replacing the front door speakers would add a bit more clarity to the top and bottom ends of the sound. Gordon Quote
El Dingo Posted November 16, 2005 Author Report Posted November 16, 2005 Thanks - I'm going to give it a try. Off to search the internet for a MP3 player. Quote
Ogben Schmutzel Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 El Dingo, I tried a Blaupunkt San Diego in my Alhambra. Needed to modify the wring but worked ok with the speakers, but though I like a good sound I am not a buff like some of the folks on here. Would still have it now if it hadn't kept jumping on CD's. There are tow threads here about that if you are interested. Now got a second hand Panasonic from a mate, works fine and quite happy with the sound. Cheers.Oggy. Quote
Rallim Posted November 19, 2005 Report Posted November 19, 2005 Yes that's right I'd forgotten, I had to buy a wiring converter for my Blaupunkt as well. Gordon Quote
