dave_m Posted November 12, 2005 Report Posted November 12, 2005 Hello, its me again I have since discovered another reason my car does not heat up, see aux heater post My car had work done by frauds six months ago( new cyl head due to water pump failure) They have not refitted the thermstat so i have been six months without one. I have fitted one today but just want to make sure everything is ok as the car is definately heating up quicker now and doesn't go cold when i am moving. Heres my questions 1. what temp (on the gauge) should the thermostat allow hot water through the radiator. 2. My gauge now reads a steady 85-90' after it has warmed up is this about right many thanks, Quote

Ogben Schmutzel Posted November 12, 2005 Report Posted November 12, 2005 Same for me, takes a few miles more than I would like, but with the ambient temp at about 40 C (as it is tonight) it took about 6 or 7 miles maybe more, to get there, then it hovered as you say at about 90 C, sometimes dropping a bit. Before you did the thermostat did it ever get anywhere near there. BTW my Aux Heater isn't working either at the moment  Cheers.Oggy. Quote
dave_m Posted November 13, 2005 Author Report Posted November 13, 2005 Before the thermostat was fitted if i was stationary the temp would reach about 70 then as soon as i started moving would go back down to the bottom of the scale, even with aux heater running the same would happen, Fraud will be geting a phone call on monday to let them know about this, I cant believe it really that their technicians can be so incompetent i know mistakes do happen but it seems everytime they have my car something like this happens. the only thing now is the radiator does not seem to get hot even when the temp gauge is at around 85-90 is this normal as i forgot to test the thermostat before i fitted it. Although surely if it did not work correctly the temp would rise significantly above 90 when the car is stationary. Quote
soptom Posted November 13, 2005 Report Posted November 13, 2005 If the fan is cutting in, surely it's getting hot enough? Quote
dave_m Posted November 13, 2005 Author Report Posted November 13, 2005 Fan won't cut in as rad does'nt seem to warm up enough Quote
dave_m Posted November 13, 2005 Author Report Posted November 13, 2005 Theres a couple of questions I have if someone can answer them. 1. what temp does the fan cut in at (Gauge reading & Specs Reading)2. what temp does the thermostat start to open?3. what is the normal operating temp of the 1.9 tdi engine the reason i am asking these questions is that when my water pump started to fail there was no indication on the temp gauge that anything was wrong which eventually led to my cylinder head being destroyed. I am paranoid that other problems may cause the same and that i may have to fork out again for a new head as apparently they do not take to well to overheating. my cooling system seems to be working ok its just that the rad does not seem to warm up now i have fitted the thermostat Quote
marty16610 Posted November 13, 2005 Report Posted November 13, 2005 dave m-- See my post "cold hose & update. Ive same prob with cold rad changed pump & stat , flushed system but no luck. Stat i fitted is marked 87 deg. my temp gauge sits 3/4 over but rad and bottom hose are cold. If driven fast gauge continues to rise until i turn heater on then it drops a bit. Good luck m8 Quote
Guest stevebm1 Posted November 13, 2005 Report Posted November 13, 2005 a friend of mine says that it depends how much coolant is in the system,as to when the thermostat will open.I assume the nearer to the min the quicker the system gets hot? Quote
