Manxman Posted November 8, 2005 Report Posted November 8, 2005 This problem has happened twice today. When stationary with engine ticking over at traffic lights or stop sign I see smoke coming from the offside rear wheel arch with the smell of unburnt fuel. I switch off the engine and restart to cure it . It is very intermittent. Is there some form of exhauster in the wheel arch area? Any advice on what needs to be done to put it right will be much appreciated. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted November 8, 2005 Report Posted November 8, 2005 Do a search on Aux heaters - Basically there is an auxilliary heater that uses diesel mounted under the N/S just in front of the wheel arch. It may be that the smoke or fumes are passing underneath the car. Quote
johnb80 Posted November 8, 2005 Report Posted November 8, 2005 Congratulations, you've won this years star prize for the first real aux heater question. You get 2 free drinks at the virtual bar - enjoy Quote
Goofygolfer Posted November 8, 2005 Report Posted November 8, 2005 perhaps the mods could create a special aux heater section now winter is near  Quote
Manxman Posted November 8, 2005 Author Report Posted November 8, 2005 Thanks for the info. I had no idea there was such an item. So I guess the best way to see if it is working is to feel if the unit is getting hot ? Quote
Bigjeeze Posted November 8, 2005 Report Posted November 8, 2005 Not really! You could get burnt. The Aux heater will operate when the temperature is low and assists the engine to produce heat as it doesn't produce enough to heat such a large interior. If your temperature gauge gets to normal fairly quickly and your heater works Ok then chances are everything is OK. If not then you may have a problem. I think though that the temperature of late hasn't been cold enough to make it kick in - but then again it does seem to vary from about 5 c to 10c Hope that helps a bit. Quote
Guest MATT Posted November 8, 2005 Report Posted November 8, 2005 :D  :D :) :) :) who was it who predicted this? MATT Quote
johnb80 Posted November 9, 2005 Report Posted November 9, 2005 Dunno, couldn't have been difficult to do, a bit like I predict it's going to get dark tonight or I predict that people will buy lots of gifts in December or even I predict VR6GALAXY is having a good time :( Quote
JToh Posted November 9, 2005 Report Posted November 9, 2005 Sorry to dwell on this topic of white smoke and unburnt fuel etc.. My galaxy has started to churn out rather excessive white smoke last couple of mornings with the smell going into the cabin - not good for my two young daughters. I had to wound down the windows and let the smell (like parafin) out of the cabin. Question is whether this is normal (iot seems like it based on previous postings) or due to poor fuel-air mix or vapour entering the system or other faults? This is sporadic and doesn't happen every morning, despite low temperature. Last time I had a "Alternator Workshop" and thanks to John80 who pointed out that it was the fanbelt, my local dealer re-routed and the problem has now been rectified. So I am hoping a member can point me in the right direction once again! This must have been covered elsewhere and owners must have this "white smoke" problem but for me, it is getting ridiculous the amount coming out and into the cabin! Thanks alot! Quote

JToh Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005  Blatters Not being clued-up, I take it that the white smoke problem on your galaxy was fixed by the dealer fitting a revised glow plug? My local dealer in South London dismissed this problem as being normal but as I said, the white smoke churns out for some time and worse, lots of it getting into the cabin. Can I have your dealer's details (name and tel no) and get my dealer to have a word and get some advice? Sounds crazy but it seems to be the only way! Thanks very much! Quote
Guest blatters Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005 JToh, The dealer is David Harrison, Peebles, Scotland. Tell them to speak with Allan, the Service Manager. They have helped another Galaxy owner through another dealer who called to ask for advice. It was an upgrade to the booster heater that I believe they fitted under warranty. It resolved the smoke (people were stopping me to explain that my car had caught fire!) and it also dealt a death blow to the anoying ticking noise that I got - that's gone now and only the lovely jet sound is heard. Here is their web site. http://www.harrisoncars.co.uk/aboutus.asp It's the Peebles branch you need. Best wishes. Blatters Quote
JToh Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005  Blatters Thanks very much for the information. I will speak to my dealer asap so they can liaise with David Harrison! The white smoke is a big problem, too much in fact and while it happened a couple of times last year, it has come back with a vengence this year. With two young kids and the smoke coming into the cabin, I need to have it sorted asap and before my warranty runs out next June! Whilst I am not exactly an expert on the technical side of things it is good to know that I can always count on members like yourself (and John80 who gave sound advice on solution to my problem with the "Alternator Workshop" warning) for great advice! Many thanks! Jimmy Quote
