CD Autochangers could soon become a thing of the past.

According to Visteon, a major components supplier, USB ports will start to appear on cars in 2006. The idea is that users can connect a memory stick to their in car CD player and have instant access to hundreds of tracks. The clever bit is that the CD player will see the device just like an Autochanger, so drivers will be able to select tracks via their normal audio controls.

For reasons of safety, the USB port will be kept away from the CD player, possibly in the glovebox. No-one wants drivers fiddling with a memory stick while driving down the motorway.

My Blaupunkt (an ebay reboxed goods special! B) ) will read MMCs and SD Storage cards and play any MP3's it finds... ok not as convienient as a USB memory stick, but it allows me to play songs that I've got on my pocketpc memory card.

My Blaupunkt Woodstock DAB54 has a SD card slot for this, it can even record the radio to the card, and it has a 15 second pre-start buffer so you don't miss the start of the song by the time you press the button. I have had it for over a year.

Once again, very little is truly new.

I had endless music in my Transit back in 1981.

It was a Sharp Auto Reverse Cassette but it did get a bit tedious repeating the same songs every 60 minutes though.

I STILL havent finished building my InCar PC that will give me access to thousands of MP3 files and now that I bought the wife an iPOD that can plug into the radio in either car, I probably never will. I suspect I will use it for something else.
