A big thanks (again) to this fine forum. The Gal (99 110 Tdi) lost power suddenly and I suspected the maf sensor. It had been changed at 50k and with 95k on the clock I thought it had gone again. A trawl of previous threads suggested that the vacuum pipes needed a good heck - and guess what.....one of the vac pipes (on the temp sensor on the intercooler pipe) had come off. Back on and all was well.

So to the quick questions. I ran for about 300 miles in what I now know was limp mode. Doing 70 max and way slower up hills! Any engine damage likely?

Second question relates to the maf sensor. I read a few threads on the net which suggested that cleaning the sensor with say carb cleaner is a good thing. Anyone tried that?

Appreciate any thoughts and thanks again.

...carb cleaner won't make a blind bit of difference (unless you count the placebo effect), the MAF element gets seriously hot, and it is burnt on deposits (plus oxidation breakdown) that cause the problem.
