cochapman Posted October 30, 2005 Report Posted October 30, 2005 With the warning of an impending bad winter, I was considering getting some "winter" tyres for my wife's Galaxy. I've got some spare 16" steel wheels (a very worthwhile Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted October 30, 2005 Report Posted October 30, 2005 I wouldn't necessarily recommend Marks & Spencers own brand tyres (their cotton/wool blend socks are very nice though), however I guess that if you don't like them you can always take 'em back :D :D :) Quote
cochapman Posted October 30, 2005 Author Report Posted October 30, 2005 Fantastic!! It's amazing how abbreviations can be misinterpreted either by accident or for comic effect :) Anyway, looking at another thread (topic=6235), I see someone has fitted 275/55/17 which gives a diameter of ~29", which is pretty much the same as a 215/70/16. So, I reckon some ex Land Rover or Discovery tyres might work pretty well. Come on, someone shoot me down. It can't be this easy, can it? :D Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted October 30, 2005 Report Posted October 30, 2005 Come on, someone shoot me down. It can't be this easy, can it? :D Whats the easy part? fitting old landy tyres or just shooting you down? :D it all depends on what tread pattern you go for as well? big knobbly tyres will drive you nuts! also the load rateing of the tyres? Galaxy's run on re enforced tyres! personally I cant see what the fuss is? if the roads get bad and you cant drive on them, you stay at home :) wrapped up nice and warm in front of the fire, cuppa in hand laughing while watching all the other idiots on tv who went out and are now stuck in the bad weather :D Quote
chromedome Posted October 30, 2005 Report Posted October 30, 2005 The tyres on the Galaxy should be reinforced. For safety and insurance reasons you should only fit the recommended type of tyre. Quote
El Dingo Posted October 30, 2005 Report Posted October 30, 2005 Personally, I would stay with the same rolling diameter. I have previously changed 195/65 x 15 for 205/60 x 15 on an Audi, but this is a standard tyre option on that car anyway, and the rolling diameter is the same for these tyres. If you go too large on diameter you risk hitting something with the tyre - like a brake line or bodywork. Same goes for a wide tyre. You might find this page interesting, especially the calculator about halfway down the page... http://www.max-boost.co.uk/max-boost/inter.../tyre_bible.htm Cheers, Quote
Mauser Posted October 30, 2005 Report Posted October 30, 2005 I'm with you vr6galaxy,More than 1/2" snow and its stay @ home time with heating on number 9, a cup of coffee and a bar of chocolate :).Soz bit of topic....there again a topic is a chocolate bar :D.Simon Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted October 30, 2005 Report Posted October 30, 2005 ...Yo cochapman, why don't you just get some 15" steelies from ebay and use the tyres you already have? Or buy some chains (they'll remain buried unused somewhere at the back of the garage when the next ice age arrives). Still, I assume your gal is FWD so I guess this is all academic, here in the southeast of England snow is such a rarity that it beats me why there are so many 4x4's. Beware of the survivalist mentality, it could mean the onset of a mid-life crisis! :) Quote
Guest blatters Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 Have a look at the 'Spider Spikes' thread and there is also a link to ADAC, the German AA breakdown recovery service. They have just completed a test of 37 winter tyres in detail. Makes for good reading. Two 'winters' were so poor that ADAC wouldn't recommend them. ADAC also have some good advice for fitting winter tyres since we, in Britain, rarely use them. The link translates through Google into English but if there is a problem just use the Google search engine to locate the home page and select 'translate'. I'm having some Vredestein Snowtrac 2 winter tyres fitted this week. I live in the Scottish Borders area and we're taking the Galaxy to Austria for the Xmas / New Year period for a skiing holiday. You need to be careful about the tyre sizes. It is normal for winter tyres to be a little narrower than the summer ones. Be careful to ensure that you keep the backs of the wheels clear so that there is room for the running gear and remember that the Galaxy does not accept standard snow chains. Some people say you can use small diameter link type chains but, after much consultation with folk on this site and my dealer, I've gone for some Spider Spikes (Sport version). Best wishes.
