I have just had my car stolen :D and with three kids it has pushed me into what i was going to do eventually and that is buy a gal :D . Ive searched the forums for "buying used" but not much luck.

I dont have an awful lot to spend probably about 3-4k and ive seen a 2l petrol 96/n which i have viewed and i have to say for the age is in immaculate condition. Only thing i can see as a problem is she has done 103k but for the price i doubt i will get much better anyway.

can anyone offer me any advice on what to look for etc and whether that milage will have made this type of engine weak as im a complete noob to the galaxy.

Ps I am quite a good mechanic (replaced clutches, gearboxes, head gaskets etc) so whats this car like to work on?

Many Thanks from a prospective owner!!!!!

All the usual things - check that all the electrics work, cables through doors and tailgate can cause problems so double check locking, windows etc. The engine should be sound and though a bit under powered can go for many, many miles. Check the passenger footwell for water ingress (many reasons for this) if it's wet, double check the ECU's under the passenger seat. Make sure ABS is spot on i.e. warning light working and extinguished whilst driving. Finally check that the aircon works if fitted.

There have been similar questions posted with a good list of normal things.

Apart from the usual, I would say look for signs that it has been used as a taxi. The 7 seaters are popular for taxis and subsequent clocking at sale time.

Scratched doors and handles, excessively worn rear seats etc. The brakes discs are easily seen for comparison with stated mileage.
