danyoda1 Posted October 23, 2005 Report Posted October 23, 2005 i know that the mk1 v6 galaxy's use the vw vr6 engine so i would imagine that they are pretty much bomb proof but what mileage are they good for assuming they have been looked after and serviced regularly? i am asking because i am possibly looking at a high milage example cheers in advance Quote
Denis Posted October 23, 2005 Report Posted October 23, 2005 The only problem I'm aware of is failure of the timing chain tensioner, only a cheap bit of plastic but it's a massive job to get to it- engine out/ major stripdown. There is a good thread with pictures (or a link, not sure) on here. Quote
GSMGuy Posted October 23, 2005 Report Posted October 23, 2005 I would reckin that any modern petrol engine, having been maintained properly should be good for at least a 1/4 of a million miles.... And possibly double that for a similarly looked after diesel... I mean, 15 years ago, a friend of mine was runnig an old Black cab - with an old Austin 2.2l diesel... way before the transit 2.5Di, anyway, he had run it for 12 years, nothing other than monthly oil changes.... Had done 3/4 million miles in it before it had to go, due to corrosion, as I remember, he sold the motor to another cabbie, prob still gong today! As a further example, last year my brotyher bought an Audi A4 TDi 130 sport -- 2001 with 140k on it and full history... Still ran like a sewing machine, even after he put 60k on it in a year... Sold it a few months ago for Quote
Sharanfx Posted October 24, 2005 Report Posted October 24, 2005 150K is common on VR6 without any major problems. Quote
johnb80 Posted October 24, 2005 Report Posted October 24, 2005 Not according to many others, Car Mechanics mag did a feature on the VR6 and the cam chain problem which is 'popular' around the 80,000 mark apparently. I have no experience of this myself as you are all aware I'm sure, I like the old oil birner. Regards - JB Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted October 24, 2005 Report Posted October 24, 2005 150K is common on VR6 without any major problems. Have to agree there as I'm well over the 1.5K mark and still climbing :) no chain rattle yet! as for the engine out to replace the chains! it's a gear box out job only  due to the chains being that end of the engine  Quote
tim-spam Posted October 24, 2005 Report Posted October 24, 2005 I guess that using only good quality oil would help with tensioner life? Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted October 24, 2005 Report Posted October 24, 2005 I guess that using only good quality oil would help with tensioner life? It may help keep the engine running smoother but the tensioners are the weak point of the engine  they wear and fail and can kill the engine in the process  Quote
danyoda1 Posted October 24, 2005 Author Report Posted October 24, 2005 thanks guys i will be going to look at it this weekend hopefully i will join the ranks of galaxy owner someday!!! Quote
iainkirk Posted October 26, 2005 Report Posted October 26, 2005 My old V6 Gal suffered from engine trouble at 100,000 miles. Arranged for a 'temporary repair' and sold to a taxi firm. Engine expired terminally about 3 months later <G> Quote
fozzer Posted October 27, 2005 Report Posted October 27, 2005 180K on mine and still running fine Quote
Sharanfx Posted October 27, 2005 Report Posted October 27, 2005 If you hear any strange rattles, just get them sorted ASAP before they become terminal. Its when you ignore the little warning signs and all of a sudden it goes bang Quote
johnswlondon Posted August 6, 2007 Report Posted August 6, 2007 only get this model if you are going to get it properly serviced.it has so much power going through the chain that they stetch very quickly. Quote
dipsomaniac Posted August 8, 2007 Report Posted August 8, 2007 170,000 on mine and ok apart from damn coolant leak Quote
Krzysztof Posted October 4, 2008 Report Posted October 4, 2008 There is no problems wih engine until 150k, but keep in mind that almost each auto gearbox dies at 100k. Quote
