Just started this week.

After turning the engine off I'm getting a humming and tapping / knocking noise from the engine bay for approx 5mins.

Sounds like a 50cc moped with a poor exhaust or a lawnmower. It's not the booster heater shutting down - I know what that sounds like and it's working fine.

This is new.

And the only thing of note that happened this week is that on Monday, the timing (cambelt) and pre-tensioner belt was changed by my dealer. The noises started on the Tuesday.

It occurs whether the air-con is on or off. Could it be the compressor winding down - just a guess from someone who knows zip technically! I'm worried as, although everything is still working fine, it doesn't sound right and definately sounds as if it's going to be expensive when, whatever it is, eventually breaks down!

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I'm gonna put my head over the parapet...

My Galaxy is a 2.3 - there is a small electric pump above the engine at the rear of the engine bay, which I assume pumps coolant around after turning the engine off. It will run for 5 mins. or so even if you only turn the ignition on/off.

If the motor bearing or impeller failed, I can imagine that this would get noisier than the normal humming that I can hear with my car.

Try turning the ignition on/off and put your hand on the unit - if it vibrates gently it's probably OK.

Is that what's making the noise?

Thanks El Dingo.

I'm on holiday next week and, just as soon as it stops raining up here in South-East Scotland, I will get out there and check it out.

I'll post my reply after that.

Regards.

Hi El Dingo,

It finally stopped raining here today (Tuesday) and, after letting the door of the Ark down, I ventured out to the Galaxy!

You're right, it appears to be the object in your picture that is making the noise. Mine is a TDi so things are a little different in the engine bay but I definately think we are talking the same object.

It's humming and vibrating. When I twiddle it with my fingers (I can just reach) the tone of the noise changes. It does sound a bit like the impeller pump on my central heating that is slowly wearing out.

My Galaxy is just over 2yrs old. Do you think this will still be covered by the warranty? Are we talking urgent repair? It's only just started making the noise in the last week or so.

Look forward to hearing from you and thanks for the help thus far.

Regards.

OK,

The dealer suggests that the vibrating is normal and that you can hear these things running on for 5-10mins or so after shut-off on all Galaxy's.

I must admit that this is a new noise for me.

What's everyone else's experience - do you guys hear this vibrating noise in the cabin after shut-off?

It's going into the dealer next week for them to decide whether it's ok or not.

Any thoughts appreciated.

You can only just hear mine if it's deadly quiet surroundings i.e. not windy or a busy street etc. I would go back to the dealer and ask him to demo another Galaxy and see if it makes the same noise, when it doesn't insist that it's changed.

Mine went recently, making a rumbling and knocking sound until it stopped completely. By moving it about the rumbling would come and go.

New one was fitted and, like others have said, it's very quiet just a slight hum in the background.

My dealer has confirmed that there is a fault and the pump is on the way out. The sound varies but from time to time the thing is just stopping when it shouldn't.

But the dealer has assured me that they do buzz and that this, in itself, does not mean that it's duff. They had another Galaxy side by side to compare it on the day in the workshop.

Unfortunately for me, my EU Belgium sourced Galaxy that I bought brand new (not pre-registered) from Motorhouse 2000 in Cannock, has only a 2yr warranty and not the 3yrs from Ford UK. So bad luck Blatters

Anyway, I've no complaint with Motorhouse as this is my second car from them and they've been fine (trade in value so poor though that you'd best sell privately).

The dealer has offered to apply to Ford UK for a discretionary warranty claim because of the low mileage (42,000) and age (2yrs, 2mths) so that's decent, I guess. :(

Cost: we think around

Yesterday my Galaxy (2.3 petrol) began emitting a struggling electric motor noise with a less than subdued gurgling undertone. I had been suspicious of trouble earlier as I detected the scent of coolant liquid. The sound was ominous after we got home and turned the engine off.

Sure enough, as I cranked it up today there was a STOP warning and

As long as you know what you re talking about and it makes you happy then I guess it is worth a post.

I also have a pump that is on it's way out, same symptoms - it's gone from a quiet zizzing noise to a chonka-chonka-chonka noise. Question for the experts -what is this pump required for ? is it primarily to look after the Turbo unit on Diesels ?

Questions for Allenjens:

How did you get 180BHP out of a 2.3, a re-chip?

How does Galaxy air conditioning cope with the heat and humidity in Singapore? even after repair ours seems to have to work flat-out to cope with the odd 30C day we have in the UK.

How about introducing yourself in new members and telling us a bit more?

The pump continues to circulate the coolant to prevent hot-spots occurring and damaging the cylinder head. The turbo has no coolant connections.

Hi,

I'm new to this forum but it reads like my service history. We brought out Galaxy form a dealer that was in receivership, got a bargain and a load of trouble.

Had new window mechanisms, air con pump and condenser, air bag recalls, coolant leaks, 3!!!! rollbar links, auto box oil leaks, new spare wheel carrier.......I'm sure I could start my own forum.

It's done 34k and we love it... I'm out of warrantee now and I can see this forum being very useful. Thanks.

I'm currently having problems with this water pump, I noticed it getting louder but if I put light pressure on the connector the note would change and the revs pick-up.

when it finally stopped it took a fuse too, the same one that powers the air-con!!!

I changed the fuse and it managed a few rpm, at the connector end you can see the oilite bearing and the end of the armature.

I have put a small drop of WD 40 on the end of the armature and so far so good, its not as smooth as it was but its running fairly fast and not blown any more fuses.

It would be better to strip the motor and clean it as too much oil will have the reverse effect..resist the urge to spray loads of WD on it.

Sods law, it will last until we have 2 foot of snow! :)

Hope this helps someone.

Thanks

kite-deck,

Frankly, we loved our Galaxy and intended to keep it for some time. But at 2.5yrs we had a fair old list of failures and so sold it.

The booster heater had failed and, the week that we were due to exchange it with the dealer (after the deal had been signed off), the aircon failed and the climate control started flashing.

A lovely car but the ownership experience is seriously flawed by lots of minor / mid sized failures and Ford dealers that aren't to hot on customer service and friendliness.

I hope your experience improves.

Regarding the aux-water pump, the dealer contacted Ford UK and they agreed a 50% contribution for the replacement. My Galaxy was a Belgium sourced car via Motorhouse 2000 and only came with 2yr warranty. So I wonder whether you should contact Ford UK, explain your situation and see if they might help. The whole replacement cost was about
