On the way home, about 5 mins after leaving work I had to hit the brakes quite hard to avoid another driver. The display panel then lit up STOP, and then BRAKE FAULT. Pulled car over and warning lights went out. Carried on journey (approx 12 miles taking it easy) with no problems. Have looked in hand book and says to take to Frauds and have it checked. Does anyone have any ideas of what to look for/at in the morning before I part with more cash at main dealers - Thanks.

2.4children,

Had exactly the same last year and got the fright of my life thinking the brakes had failed. :D Took it to the local Quickfit and they showed me that pads were very worn.

As the disks had rust rings on the outside, the rust ring had cut the cable of the wire from the wear detector of the pads. They fitted new pads (

We've covered the STOP message before - mine still does this from time-to-time, even when stopping suddenly from very low speed. Plenty of pad life left, plenty of brake fluid in the reservoir. Most common suggestion for the cause is low oil pressure when you brake suddenly, sending all the oil away from the pump's pick-up point. However I doubt that.

I just conclude that it is another "peculiarity" of the vehicle.

I think it could be that the oil surges forward making the sensor think the oil level is too high. But that is just my mumblings!

On Flyingduchmans points I am willing to bet that when Quickfit wound the caliper pistons back in they did not clamp the hose and open the bleed nipple, pushing the fluid in the caliper back into the reservoir and that caused it to either overflow, so it looked like it was leaking, or pressurised the reservoir blowing the seal out.

And if there was a ridge on the edge of the disks then the pads may not have been making full contact. This causes a spongy feel as the caliper does not push evenly onto the pad because the pad is sitting at a slight angle. New disks were required from the start.

My wife recently had the 'STOP,brake failure, refer manual', she didn't mention it until a couple of weeks ago - I drove her Galaxy for a week and it occured the once, I was braking a little harder than normal and changing from one lane on a roundabout to the other, the display came on and 'oh!!!' I was worried - told the wife it does happen, it's a bit intermittent and take it into the garage and see what they say? Maybe 'fingers crossed' warranty might do it? :)

She took it in yesterday, they said that the brake pads were low and she got them replaced for a nice charge!
