What dose the egr stand for ,Exhaust gas regulator ?

I done a search on Elsawin ,Bentley manual and looked though peter russek book but the search just gave me everything relating to egr in spel;t words I need to input the full word

ERG Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, it's to do with the emmisions, a certain amount of the exhaust gas is vented back into engine to mix with the new air/fuel mix and ignited for a second time! leading to less crap being stuck out the exhaust! if you have VAGCOM you can close the valve down! this can help stop the inlet manifold gumming up! and is said to release a few BHP in the process! and reduce the amount of black smoke out of the exhaust!

...so it's not to do with the emission control system then?

Nitrous Oxide is N2O, this is NOT a by-product of the combustion process, other oxides of Nitrogen are the problem!

VR6Galaxy is pretty much spot on, these emission control systems do nothing for the performance or efficiency/economy of your petrol engine.

I kept it simple  to much info for some people can be a bad thing! ;) I kept the chemical analysis and the how and whys out the picture as it gets a bit difficult for some when you use big words :P

bolx to the techi gas stuff and get back to my device 2 failure :P :P

and correct me but a car does not product nitrous oxide or it would run on its own by products but thxs any how ;)

Posted

now that would be good 1 ltr of fuel would last a lifetime

oh did it hit a raw nerve steve  ;) :P

Posted

nah just cant stand techi bolx just to show your a smart ass ;)

can be done on own with out help

but on a serious not the only thing it seams to show as a fault is loss of top end other than that its fine but when the lights on its quicker?

must be the nos :P

The stuff injected into car engines (along with extra fuel) is Nitrous Oxide (N20) not Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), but a car an not run on N2O alone, you need to use extra fuel to burn along with the liberated O2

The guy does say NOx in his blurb though. Clearly he has become confused by listening to to many street racers talking of "NOS" or "NOZ"

Look on the bright side though, if a car did produce N2O anyone who tried to kill themself by putting a hose from the exhaust into the car would die laughing!

Conclusion:

ALWAYS be careful what you quote, someone may SOUND like they know what they're talking about when in fact all they're doing is cutting 'n' pasting someone elses mistakes!

Hair commercials:

'Here comes the science part'

'I love it when they talk science'

My interpretation:

'Here comes the Bullshit'

Now how in the hell would an 'Industrial Chemist' know how a car engine works?

Various Nitrogen Oxides have ALWAYS been produced by internal combustion engines, it's not a new phenomenon caused by lean burn high compression multivalve engines at all!

The only thing that's new are the increasingly tighter emissions regulations, which is why these engines are now used; the combustion chamber design allows for full burn (high compression) lean mixture combustion with less likelihood of 'pinking'. Do you seriously imagine that manufacturers would increase mechanical complexity (and therefore costs) unless regulation FORCED them to address these issues.

This is how 'chipping' a car works by reducing EGR control and increasing fueling and ignition advance.

Economy and emissions are where it's at for manufacturers of volume motoring.

been interesting  but as always some one buts in with someone elses bull/bolx and as always the real thread is pushed aside so we go from egr failure on device two too holy cow your car produces noz/nos :)

so can we get back to

DOES ANY ONE KNOW WHAT DEVICE TWO IS ON THE EGR

many thx to all that have inputted :)

many thx steve

To my knowledge there are several main parts of the ERG system, the ERG valve, the solenoid that operates it, the pipe from the exhaust manifold, the exhaust gas cooler and the pipe to the intake manifold, then there are several sensors and vacuumme pipes that control all the above! so no! I aint got a clue what device two is :) I just answered another posters question so dont start on me as I know where you live  :)
