Guest vr6galaxy Posted October 10, 2005 Report Posted October 10, 2005 Have you tried flushing it out? pour some oil though the hole in the top and see if you can disturb it from it's resting place! a few taps with a rubber mallet may help it on it's way? Quote
marty16610 Posted October 10, 2005 Author Report Posted October 10, 2005 The way things are going i wont have much original car left either. :( Quote
marty16610 Posted October 10, 2005 Author Report Posted October 10, 2005 Tried that, poured old oil through .Pretty sure it is behind the crown-wheel opposite side to drain hole. Just my luck. Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted October 10, 2005 Report Posted October 10, 2005 Flexible air line and compressor! try blowing it around to see if it will move? Quote
toneinblack Posted October 10, 2005 Report Posted October 10, 2005 Would it be worth leaving the drain plug out and getting a few mates to push the car down the street and over some bumps in the hope that it falls out? Quote
Justice Posted October 10, 2005 Report Posted October 10, 2005 He's only jealous as he has replaced most parts on his old nail apart from the gearbox he's looking at replacing the engine but isn't sure if the one he's stuck a deposit down on is the right one? as his a 16V where as the one he's going for is only a 12V or even a 24V. Well at least I'll have the newest old VR6 Sharan around and for your information the gearbox is a recon one 14mths ago :( Quote
Guest marcusheawood Posted October 10, 2005 Report Posted October 10, 2005 ...Dunno about you guys but I would seriously consider flushing the gearbox through with a light oil flushing oil (5W) to remove the possibility of the bolt head being lodged somewhere, if you were to jack the car up on the o/s while it was full with flushing oil, bubble compressed air through it, then drain it fast and repeat when the car was level you might get it. Infinitely preferable to a gearbox strip, and worth a try (plus it'll clean the 'box out)! Quote
marty16610 Posted October 10, 2005 Author Report Posted October 10, 2005 Many thanks all. going to try the flushing suggestions tomorrow nothing to loose eh!!! :( Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted October 10, 2005 Report Posted October 10, 2005 Did you try the dealers for the shift selector mech? Quote
marty16610 Posted October 11, 2005 Author Report Posted October 11, 2005 vr6-- Yes, ordered new shaft, oil seal, bolts plus few other bits that are worn for under Quote
bigdaddy Posted October 11, 2005 Report Posted October 11, 2005 Try HSS hire shops they have endoscopes for hire, if thats to much, there is a gearbox for sale on Ebay Quote
marty16610 Posted October 11, 2005 Author Report Posted October 11, 2005 Tried everything, I've now given up and booked it into a friend of a friends garage next week to have the box removed and turned upside down and shaken..Hes only charging me Quote
marty16610 Posted October 16, 2005 Author Report Posted October 16, 2005 UPDATE! Car goes in thurs 20th to have bolt recovered from box. im going to get the new bolt spot welded to lock it in place so i dont have to go through all this again. I also found the cause of my occasional hard brake pedal while its been off the road, split servo vac hose, ordered new one to fit when i get the car back. CHEERS ALL  Quote
marty16610 Posted October 20, 2005 Author Report Posted October 20, 2005 JOB DONE. box removed and stripped, bolt recovered no apparent damage to gearbox, box refitted and car returned. Total cost Quote
Guest NIGEL15 Posted October 20, 2005 Report Posted October 20, 2005 Just wondered if you experienced any problems leading up to when the bolt fell out? I've been experiencing some problems with third gear. It isn't syncro crunching type problem, more like something stopping the selectors moving. Quote
marty16610 Posted October 20, 2005 Author Report Posted October 20, 2005 Hi m8. I didn't have any warning of anything wrong but saying that since the selector has been repaired the gear change is much more positive. Might pay to whip selector out to check-better to be safe than have an empty wallet. Quote
